Kay f i r s t became an a c t i v e I n s t i t u t e member i n 1940 when she
j o i n e d the " Echo H i l l Branch" near Ulestlock. There she held a l l the
o f f i c e s at Branch l e v e l . When the McMillan family moved to Edmonton
i n 1950 Kay j o i n e d the Edmonton I n s t i t u t e where she served invarious
o f f i c e s . I n 1965 she was appointed P r o v i n c i a l Treasurer of A. W. I. and
held t h i s p o s i t i o n u n t i l s h e became P r o v i n c i a l Secretary- Treasurer
i n 1971. This newly created combined o f f i c e of S e c . T r e s . was the
f i r s t step i n preparation for a future P r o v i n c i a l O f f i c e . She
c a r r i e d on with the combined duties i n her home u n t i l 1975.
In A p r i l 1975 a s u i t a b l e P r o v i n c i a l Office was located and leased.
It was through the u n t i r i n g e f f o r t s of Kay and husband George that
the Office was made ready for occupation. Due to t h e i r continued
d i l i g e n t support and a s s i s t a n c e during the t r a n s i t i o n from the Home
O f f i c e to the new premises, the newly elected Executive was able to
be well e s t a b l i s h e d by the o f f i c i a l opening date of September, 1975.
At t h i s time A. W. I pays t r i b u t e to Kay's husband, George, who has been
her steadfast supporter and helper i n a l l her I n s t i t u t e endeavors. He
has been a most c o - o p e r a t i v e a s s i s t a n t to the I n s t i t u t e cause. During
her term of o f f i c e Kay proved to be a conscientious and e f f i c i e nt
s e c r e t a r y ( d e d i c a t e d to f u l f i l l i n g the aims and o b j e c t i v e s of the
Women's I n s t i t u t e i n c a r r y i n g out her numerous duties and o b l i g a t ions
as Secretary and Treasurer for the ten years she held o f f i c e.
Though Kay no longer holds o f f i c e with the A. W. I, she has few
i d l e moments. Kay and George are f a i t h f u l attenders, staunch supporters
and workers at St. Stephen's United Church i n Edmonton. That they
both enjoy gardening i s evident from the beautiful d i s p l a y of
flowers surrounding t h e i r home.
