MRS. GEORGE WELBOURN
Mrs. Welbourn was born i n Gait, Ontario, on J u ly
17, i860, When she was f i v e years of age her family returned
to H e i l h i l l , Scotland where they remained for four
years before returning to Canada. They settled at Oshawa,
Ontario.
When she was only sixteen years of age she began
teaching a Grade One class at the handsome salary of two
hundred dollars a year. She remained teaching u n t i l she
had become the p r i n c i p a l at twice the salary. She married
George Welbourn on Becember 28, 1886.
Mr. and Mrs. Welbourn and family came to Edmonton
October 4, 1891. Mr. Welbourn had accepted a teaching
position with the Presbyterian Church Mission on the Indian
Reserve at Winterburn. She remained i n Winterburn f o r two
years and then returned to Edmonton f o r f i v e years, before
moving back to a farm i n the Winterburn d i s t r i c t . She i s
the mother of eight children, f i v e of whom are s t i l l l i v i n g.
Two sons were k i l l e d i n the P i r s t World War.
