MRS. MAY SOMERVILLE
Mrs. May Somerville was " born i n Raton,
Hew Mexico on May 16, 1898 to Mr. and Mrs.
A l f r e d V/. Manby of E n g l i s h and I r i s h descent.
She attended schools i n Denver, Colorado,
and l a t e r worked as a Bank Clerk. She
was married to V/. M. Somerville on August
17, 1921 and they have made t h e i r home i n
Cluny, Alberta f o r 51 years. They have one
daughter and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Somerville's i n t e r e s t s include
the Anglican Church and the A l b e r t a Star
Chapter No. 18 O. E. S. Gleichen. Her hobby i s gardening. She
has also helped to w r i t e h i s t o r i e s , has been s e c r e t a r y of Board
of Trade and very active i n community a f f a i r s.
Mrs. Somerville joined the Cluny V/. I . i n December 1924 and
has been a continuous member s i n c e . She has held the o f f i c e s of
P r e s i d e n t , V i c e - P r e s i d e n t , Secretary and Treasurer many times
over. She has been an u n t i r i n g worker and a very capable leader
and never h e s i t a t e s to convene a committee whether i t be a s o c i al
a f f a i r or a banquet. During the war when the W. I. was sewing,
k n i t t i n g and q u i l t i n g f o r the Red Cross, Mrs. Somerville always
d i d her share and more. The Cluny women q u i l t e d more than four
hundred q u i l t s during those years.
The Cluny W. I. presented t h i s Membership to Mrs. Somerville
at a Cluny Board of Trade J u b i l e e P a r t y f o r c i t i z e n s who have l i v ed
i n Cluny and area f o r 50 years or more - A p r i l 1964 with Mrs. Ered
Bairbourn, past Constituency Convener of Gleichen V. I. Constituency
making the presentation.
