After Gordon passed away i n 1978 Kathryn rented the land to neighbours for a
few years, but today her daughter and son- in- law farm the land once homesteaded by
Kathryn's parents. Kathryn continues to l i v e on the farm and did part- time c l e r i c al
work i n Calgary from 1979 to 1989.
Kathryn has been involved i n various community a c t i v i t i e s and has served on many
advisory committees including Alberta Wheat Pool advisory to delegate, Advisory t o
D i s t r i c t Agriculturist and South Alberta Advisory Board of TransAlta U t i l i t i e s . She
was campaign chairman for the Cancer Society i n the Langdon area for many years. She
i s a member of Unifarm, Women of Unifarm, Women i n Support of Agriculture and the
Coalition Against Pornography. She has been a Counselor for Goldeye Teen Camp. Kathryn
served on a committee to celebrate 50 years i n Alberta and Langdon's 100th Anniversary
( 1885- 1985), and to write the Tweedsmuir History of Langdon, " Langdon Legend".
Kathryn has been a member of Langdon W. I. for many years serving l o c a l l y as
Director and Secretary. She was Constituency Convener of Gleichen Constituency ( five
branches), D i s t r i c t TV Director, F i r s t and Second Vice- President of A. W. I, and i n 1984
was elected President of A. W. I, for a three year term. She represented A. W. I, on the
Federated Women's Institutes of Canada Board as Junior then Senior Board member, and
led the Alberta delegation to the 18th Triennial Conference of A. C. W. W. i n Ireland i n
1986. She also served as Provincial Convener for Education and worked on the publication
committee of A. W. I.' s history of agriculture " Yesterday". She was A. W. I. Resolutions
Chairman, where she w i l l be remembered for the capable manner i n which she
chaired the sessions, giving guidance on correct wording and i n s i s t i n g on detailed
research prior to the presentation of the resolution. At the conclusion of her Presidential
term she was presented with an A. W. I. L i f e Membership i n recognition and
appreciation of her dedicated service to the organization working for Home and Country.
Kathryn i s proud of her heritage and enjoys rural l i v i n g . Her knowledge of the
needs of rural women along with her compassion for her counterparts led t o her
appointment to the Alberta Advisory Council on Women's Issues which was formed i n 1986
