MR3. MARTIN BORSTAD
Mrs. C. M. Borstad was born Helen Bertrand a t M a n t o r v i l l e,
Minnesota August 30, 1886. Her Bather was French and. h e r Mother
was E n g l i s h and both born i n U. S. A.
She graduated from High School i n 1904 and taught a school
i n the country f o r two years before attending Normal School i n
Winona, Minn. She graduated i n June 1907 and taught i n a town
school f o r s i x years before j o i n i n g her parents i n Rocky Mountain
House i n 1913•
Her parents came t o A l b e r t a i n 1907 and homesteaded on what
i s now the town s i t e o f Rocky Mountain House. He was the f i r s t
m a i l c a r r i e r and f r e i g h t e d goods and s u p p l i e s from Red Deer. Helen
Bertrand married M a r t i n Borstad March 11, 1914 and they b e l i e ve
t h e i r marriage was the f i r s t wedding ceremony performed i n Rocky
Mountain House. Martin Borstad had come to A l b e r t a with a group
of American s e t t l e r s . With a l l h i s w o r l d l y goods r o l l e d i n a bundle
on h i s back he walked from Red Deer t o Rocky Mountain House and
s e t t l e d on a homestead south o f the f o r k s . They have three daughters
f i v e granddaughters and f i v e grandsons and one great granddaughter.
