MRS. WILLIAM NIVEN Mrs. William Niven was born Laura Davies on February 17, 1880 near Bobcaygeon, a l i t t l e v i l l a g e i n Ontario. Her Father, Thomas Davies, was of Welsh descent and her Mother, G r i s e l l a Oreton, was of I r i s h descent although both had been born i n Canada. She attended a l i t t l e country school i n Verulam township which was No. 1 log schoolhouse i n the township. Later she attended the school i n Bobcaygeon u n t i l 1893 when the family moved west to Lethbridge where she attended the High School. In I896 she took Normal School t r a i n i n g i n Regina - a four- month course for the North- West T e r r i t o r y . The School was headed by Dr. Goggin and Mr. Rothwell was his assistant with an attendance of 23. In 1897 she taught the New Norway School, out of Wetaskiwin, for the summer season of six months, and then i n her home town of Lethbridge. In 1902 she was married to William Niven who was a Canadian P a c i f i c Railway engineer. They have made t h e i r home i n Calgary and have been fortunate to be able to celebrate their Golden and Diamond Wedding Anniversaries - and on February 11, 1965 they hope to celebrate t h e i r 65th Anniversary. They have two daughters, two grandchildren and, as of now, eight great grandchildren.
