MBS. ALICE McDOHELL RUTHERFORD
Mrs. A l i c e McDonell Rutherford
was born a t Maberly, Ontario. Her
parents were Robert and Mary McDon-e
l l of Scotch and I r i s h descent.
She was married i n 1910 t o John
Rutherford and came t o Saskatchewan
where she joined the Homemakers'
club i n 1913.
They moved t o M a n n v i l l e i n
1915 and Mrs. Rutherfor^ joined
the f i r s t I n s t i t u t e which was
c a l l e d the M a n n v i l l e I n s t i t u t e.
This I n s t i t u t e was formed to a s s i st
i n war work and Mrs. Rutherford,
besides k n i t t i n g , gave of her time i n sending parcels t o the boys
Overseas. During the l a s t war she was the Convener to send supplies
to the Red Cross and p a r c e l s from the d i f f e r e n t groups every few
months t o the boys from t h i s area. At the end o f the war she helped
plan a Welcome Home P ^ r t y.
The f i r s t W. I. was also i n s t r u m e n t a l i n c o l l e c t i n g money t o
b u i l d and operate the f i r s t skating r i n k i n the town. In 1917 the
f i r s t M u n i c i p a l H o s p i t a l i n A l b e r t a was b u i l t i n M a n n v i l l e . The W. I.
had some influence i n the establishment of t h i s p r o j e c t and served
lunch at the opening ceremonies.
In 1948, a f t e r many meetings w i t h the Town Council f o r two o r
three years previous t o t h i s date, the " Restroom and L i b r a r y " was
o f f i c i a l l y opened. I t has since been turned over to the town but
the I n s t i t u t e s pay f o r h a l f of the upkeep. Mrs. Rutherford has held
o f f i c e f o r the c a r r y i n g out of the above p r o j e c t s and has done more
than her share.
Mrs. Rutherford joined the B i r c h Creek W. I. a f t e r the disbanding
of the M a n n v i l l e I n s t i t u t e a few years previously. She has held the
o f f i c e of President and has been Treasurer now f o r s e v e r a l years. She
