As one o f the e a r l i e r leaders of our O r g a n i z a t i o n and one
who had served as P r o v i n c i a l President during a c r u c i al
time i n i t s h i s t o r y , t h i s r e c o g n i t i o n of Mrs. Perguson was
w e l l deserved.
She was horn near O r a n g e v i l l e , Ontario, the only
daughter of the Reverend Mr. and Mrs. Crawford Tate. Mrs.
Perguson attended p u b l i c and h i g h schools i n Ontario where
she s p e c i a l i z e d i n mathematics and science, l a t e r teaching
i n high schools i n Ontario. She took up the study of law
and was awarded the Law Society Gold Medal i n h e r f i n a l year.
She has p r a c t i s e d the law p r o f e s s i o n w i t h her husband f o r
many years i n Trochu, A l b e r t a.
In 1918 Ruple Tate and J . P. Perguson were married and
to t h i s union a daughter, Margaret, and a son, Crawford, were
born. Mrs. Perguson has a d i s t i n c t l i k i n g f o r reading and
gardening as r e l a x a t i o n.
During her a c t i v e i n s t i t u t e years she served as Cons
t i t u e n c y Convener and as Convener of L e g i s l a t i o n . She was
D i s t r i c t 3 D i r e c t o r from 1929 t o 1933 and from 1933 to 1936
she was P r o v i n c i a l President. She represented the A l b e r t a
Women's I n s t i t u t e s at the Second Conference of the Associated
Country Women o f the World held i n Washington, D. C., i n May
and June of 1936. Although Mrs. Perguson has not taken an
a c t i v e part i n i n s t i t u t e matters on the p r o v i n c i a l l e v e l f o r
many years, she does take an i n t e r e s t i n the a f f a i r s of h er
home constituency.
