Adelaide her f i r s t musical training.
In order to further Adelaide's education the family
moved to Wetaskiwin where the p r i n c i p a l of the H i g h School
tutored her a f t e r school so that she could complete her high
school. Her ambition was to be a teacher but the nearest Normal
School was i n Regina and so Adelaide turned to music. The
family went to Minneapolis to l i v e for a time and there Adelaide
began to study vocal music.
But she was destined to return to Alberta f o r she
married Hugh John Montgomery on New Year's Eve 1903. Mr. Montgomery
had come from Bedeque, Prince Edward Island, to Wetaskiwin
i n I 8 9 8 . Here he established a successful mercantile business
and l a t e r was a member of the Alberta Legislature f or
many years.
After her marriage, Mrs. Montgomery continued to study
music and i n 1913 received her Licentiate of the Royal Academy
of Music. The following year she won the gold medal i n the soprano
solo competitions and the s i l v e r medal f o r sight singing
at the Alberta Musical F e s t i v a l . She was choir leader and organi
s t i n the Anglican Church i n Wetaskiwin f o r many years. She delighted
i n t r a i n i n g junior choirs.
Aside from her music and home Mrs. Montgomery's speci
a l interest was the Alberta Women's I n s t i t u t e s , to which she
gave long years of devoted service. During conferences Mrs. Montgomery,
as long as she was able, delighted the members with her
g i f t of song. Many w i l l never forget her singing " Trees".
In 1915 she became the f i r s t President of Wetaskiwin
W. I. Later she was elected Director of D i s t r i c t 3 , an o f f i c e she
held f o r five years and then i n 1929 she was elected the fourth
President of the Alberta Women's I n s t i t u t e s . After completing
the second term of o f f i c e , Mrs. Montgomery was Provincial Treasurer
for ten years u n t i l resigning i n 1945. For several years
she did the W. I. p u b l i c i t y f o r the whole province and then f o r a
