Mrs. Niven has heen i n t e r e s t e d i n many Calgary projects over
the years but p a r t i c u l a r l y i n S t . P a u l United Church where they
have been members f o r f i f t y - s e v e n years. Mrs. Niven was a L i fe
Member of St. Paul's M i s s i o n a r y Society u n t i l i t was absorbed by
the United Church Women a few years ago. Due to a heart c o n d i t i on
and her husband being c r i p p l e d her outside a c t i v i t i e s have had t o
be c u r t a i l e d but she i s t h a n k f u l t o be able to keep her home going
w i t h the h e l p of her younger daughter.
Calgary Women's I n s t i t u t e presented Mrs. Niven with a L i fe
Membership at t h e i r r e g u l a r meeting on June 1 2 , 1 9 6 1 i n the Oddf
e l l o w s ' H a l l , i n r e c o g n i t i o n of her long and valued work i n the
branch, and on t h e i r behalf i n the Red Cross Society.
Mrs. Niven said:
' This honor came as a great s u r p r i s e and i s very precious
to me as I have enjoyed working i n the I n s t i t u t e and have made so
many f r i e n d s h i p s and have enjoyed the good times with the members.
I do not know how I earned the honor, except I was associated f o r
the I n s t i t u t e with the J u n i o r Red Cross i n Calgary f o r many years
and with Bed Cross work during both Wars. Por t h i r t y years or more
I worked with a group o f our I n s t i t u t e women i n meeting at the Hosp
i t a l a day every month f o r mending, e t c .
' I am not able to attend the meetings now which I miss
very much, but the f r i e n d s we have made through a l l these years are
s t i l l a valued part of our l i f e and I say ' God Bless the Women's
I n s t i t u t e f o r a l l the wonderful women I have met and a l l the pleasure
and help they have given i n our pioneer country'.
