in Leduc she set out to establish one. She took a Librarian's Short
Course and organized a Library Committee. Their f i r s t Library consisted
of a few shelves i n the corner of the l o c a l Hall. The next move
was to a spare bedroom i n her home from where they were distributed
u n t i l 1952. Ten years later the town allowed them space for 4000 books.
Kathleen was a f a i t h f u l and devoted member of the W. I. and a con-scientuous
worker for Community improvement. She showed compassion and
gave encouragement when needed and was ever ready with a helping hand
whenever the occasion arose. Some examples of services rendered included
: transportation to an elderly lady for medical appointments and
assistance with her correspondence; took i n a young woman with her baby
u n t i l she was able to cope with her problem; cared for the children
when her s i s t e r and brother- in- law were k i l l e d i n a car accident u n t il
other arrangements were made; gave l o c a l Chinese nurse spending money
for three years because her Father refused to help her. To assist with
her interest i n the welfare of others the Leduc W. I. donated clothing
and gave her a monthly cheque to help with expenses incurred„ Her
philosophy was " Always look for the bright side to every problem".
She offered to care for a friend's Health Food Store for two
months so she could take a holiday. This proved too much for her- she
had a stroke which l e f t her speechless and one leg paralyzed. At present
she i s i n a Nursing Home and uses a wheel chair to get around and i s
making great progress and enjoys reading i n her spare time.
Through the years Leduc W. I. has kept her membership paid. Her
Branch presented her with a Life Membership i n recognition of her
humanitarian services to those i n need .
