SHIRLEYAN HAMMER
S h i r l e y a n ( Carter) Hammer was born i n Calgary, A l b e r t a,
f i f t h daughter of Charles and Kathleen C a r t e r . When she
was born, her older s i s t e r s happened to be reading " Anne
of Green Gables" and were so taken with the heroin Anne
S h i r l e y that they wanted the new baby named a f t e r her,
and so the name was reversed to S h i r l e y a n.
S h i r l e y a n l i v e d almost a l l of her l i f e i n Olds, A l b e r t a and
married and had her family there, She had four c h i l d r e n,
Gene, Cindy, Garnet and Mark, and they grew up on the
family farm just east of Olds.
Music was one of S h i r l e y a n ' s great t a l e n t s and loves, She
s t a r t e d p l a y i n g the piano at the age of four and never
stopped. She served as Supreme P i a n i s t for the National
Conventions of the Order of the Royal Purple, shared her
t a l e n t f r e e l y at any Women's I n s t i t u t e gathering or
conference, and played each week at the Mountain View Lodge
i n Olds for t h e i r music n i g h t . She had received a s p e c i al
award for t h i s.
