A u s t r a l i a n Scrapbook was made w i t h each member p a r t i c i p a t i n g.
I t contained p e r s o n a l l e t t e r s from each member and h i g h l i g h t s o f the year's
a c t i v i t i e s . E. M a r i o n Brown wrote i n t h e i n t r o d u c t i o n , " S e v e r a l years ago our
branch sent g r e e t i n g s to you v i a a scrapbook w i t h each o f our members c o n t r i b u t ­i
n g a l e t t e r . As time has passed, we have l o s t some of our members by e i t h er
death o r r e l o c a t i n g t o another a r e a . May we now present our new members along
w i t h those of us who have been f o r t u n a t e to c o n t i n u e our membership. We are
a l s o i n c l u d i n g h i g h l i g h t s o f our y e a r ' s a c t i v i t i e s along w i t h items of general
i n t e r e s t that we hope you w i l l enjoy."
M a r i o n Brown c l o s e s her p e r s o n a l l e t t e r t h u s : " R i g h t now we ( our f a m i l y ) a re
a l l e x c i t e d about our proposed f a m i l y t r i p to New Zealand and A u s t r a l i a during
our w i n t e r months ( Nov.- Feb). We have a l l been s a v i n g our money f o r a year and
we w i l l work to pay our way when we v i s i t these c o u n t r i e s . I f our dream comes
t r u e , I hope to d e l i v e r our g r e e t i n g s to you p e r s o n a l l y ."

SFECIAL MEETINGS:
17th B i r t h d a y P a r t y P. L. W. I. - A p r i l 10. Eleven past members
as w e l l as e i g h t e e n present members met a t t h e home of Mrs. R. Brown coming
from f o u r s u r r o u n d i n g d i s t r i c t s . In h e r r e m i n i s c i n g , M a r i a n Brown r e c a l l e d,
" Ferhaps I was e x c i t e d 17 years ago when I wondered i f enough l a d i e s were t r u ly
i n t e r e s t e d to form a Women's I n s t i t u t e branch, but I have been t h o r o u g h l y t h r i l l ­ed
w i t h the response t o our i n v i t a t i o n f o r o ur 17th b i r t h d a y p a r t y . Why d i d we
choose to c e l e b r a t e t h i s b i r t h d a y ? Last Christmas many of our young members
q u e s t i o n e d our s e n d i n g Christmas cards to past members, and knowing how much
they meant t o us (' old' members), i t was decided to have a g e t - a c q u a i n t e d party.
So here we are and I f e e l i t a r e a l p r i v e l e g e t o i n t r o d u c e you t o each other.
P l e a s e bear w i t h me as I perhaps get p e r s o n a l , s e n t i m e n t a l and r e m i n i s c e with
my " age" s t i c k i n g out a l l o v e r but as I began t o t h i n k about the p a s t , I r e a l i ze
how c l o s e l y the a c t i v i t i e s of my whole f a m i l y have been t i e d to W. I. and W. I.
f r i e n d s .
17 years ago t h i s month, Pine Lake Women's I n s t i t u t e came i n t o being i n t h i s
room w i t h nine c h a r t e r members. Mrs. Dorothy Conner, now Mrs. L e s l i e Under­wood,
was our f i r s t p r e s i d e n t . Mrs. Conner moved to Red Deer d u r i n g her f i r s t
term. Mrs. Underwood has one son and two g r a n d c h i l d r e n . I , M a r i o n Brown,
became p r e s i d e n t , D o r i s Warke, v i c e - p r e s i d e n t and F r i e d a Lawrence our most able
S e c . - t r e a s u r e r.
L o r i 3 i s a c h a r t e r member and has always been w i l l i n g to g i v e of h e r time and
t a l e n t s to us as w e l l as to h e r own community of G l e n e l l e n . Her two daughters,
Susan and Wendy, hive given D o r i s and John f o u r g r a n d c h i l d r e n . Lyle i s Gr. 12
and Terry i n G r . 9.
F r i e d a , a b i r t h d a y p a r t y would not have been complete without you. I f t h e r e was
any o r g a n i z i n g to be done, be i t h i s t o r y , c o f f e e p a r t y , e t c . , F r i e d a d i d i t .
F r i e d a and Dan's c h i l d r e n a r e M a r i e and D a v i d . Marie has f i n i s h e d High School
and worka. i n Safeways. David i s i n Gr. 10.
Vera P i e r c e i s a n o t h e r c h a r t e r member. Vera has been our s t a b i l i z e r . I f we
wanted to do something r i g h t , we asked Vera. Vera has 11 years of p e r f e ct
attendance. Vera and E r i c ' s daughters, Nola and L i n d a , are m a r r i e d and have
t h r e e c h i l d r e n . Gerald i s m a r r i e d and i s i n Pharmacy; A r n o l d has h i s Masters
i n FEEDS.
E l l a Sawyer, my good f r i e n d , i s always here and w i l l i n g . Without t h i s c h a r t er
member's support so many years ago, P. L. W. I, would not have been. E l l a and
Johnny's chosen c h i l d r e n a r e Doug, Gr. 2 and B e v e r l y , a l i t t l e fisherman.
Three o t h e r c h a r t e r members a r e : Mrs. E. Bascombe, Mrs. E . Beck and Mrs. M.
K l e v y e r . Mrs. Bascombaen. joyed our group. She d i e d Sept. 1971.
Mrs. E. Beck was a lovefly lady who grew f l o w e r s around her door. She d i e d i n
A p r i l 1962. Mrs. Margaret K l e v y e r was a member f o r a s h o r t time. She a l so
gave her t a l e n t s to the Howell's Lake Club. She has one son, C l a r k , and i s a
grandmother.
Mrs. R. P i e r c e and Mrs. E. I b e l were both g r a c i o u s l a d i e s and young a t h e a r t.
Mrs. P i e r c e d i e d i n May 196cJ and Mrs. I b e l d i e d i n June 1960.
K a t h l e e n Lawrence has the honor of b e i n g a past and present member and i s one
of our most e n t h u s i a s t i c workers - a r e a l W. I. booster with a l l h e r t a l e n t s.
