1963 EVEHTS AfTO ACTIVITIES
Our g r e a t e s t achievement f o r the y e a r 1963 was the making of
a scrap book o f A l b e r t a . We compiled i t t o send t o o u r pen p a l s i n Queensland,
A u s t r a l i a . This book was judged a t t h e C o n s t i t u t e n c y Conference i n Red Deer and
the judges commented t h a t they l i k e d i t because of i t s p e r s o n a l touch. In i t
t h e f i r s t page had g r e e t i n g s from l i n e Lake V. I. and t h e f i r s t part contained
p e r s o n a l l e t t e r s from each o f t h e members. The second s e c t i o n c o n t a i n e d communi
t y news, r e p o r t s on o u r e d u c a t i o n a l , i n d u s t r i a l and governmental systems and
h a n d i c r a f t s . Mrs. D. Lawrence sketched a map o f P i n e Lake which she c a l l e d a
" brag map". Included were snapshots, c a r t o o n s , coat o f arms and t h e r o s e ( f l o r al
emblem) o f A l b e r t a . The s c r a p book was sent t o M i s s Ada Newton, Hadei. v i a Toowoomba, Queensland, A u s t r a l i a a t t h e end o f August i n hopes i t would a r r i ve
a t i t s d e s t i n a t i o n by C h r i s t m a s.
Money Making: The l a d i e s o f t h e C u r l i n g C l u b underbid the W. I.
f o r c a t e r i n g t o t h e c u r l i n g b o n s p i e l s so i t had t o employ other means t o r a i s e
money. We d i d t h i s by p r o v i d i n g t h e F. U. A. s u b - d i s t r i c t convention w i t h a h ot
d i n n e r a t t h e P i n e Lake S c h o o l , i n s p i t e of t h e f a c t t h a t t h e r e was no stove to
keep i t warm. This d i n n e r r e a l i z e d us t h e sum o f $ 50. 1 5 .
I n J u l y we h e l d a bake s a l e a t t h e P i n e Lake Store which n e t t ed $ 11.90. A s a l e o f sewing, a l o n g w i t h a bake c o n t e s t , was a l s o t r i e d November 11
but was n o t t o o s u c c e s s f u l as few people p a t r o n i z e d i t . A t a l e n t s a l e , h e ld
a t Mrs. J . Dreeshen' 3 meeting, r e a l i z e d a good sum. Mrs. A. A l l e n was the
a u c t i o n e e r.
D o n a t i o n s : A d o n a t i o n of $ 10.00 was g i v e n t o t h e S c h o o l f or
R e t a r d e d C h i l d r e n , $ 20.00 t o t h e Cancer Fund, $ 10.00 t o t h e Hub Community Centre
f o r the p r i v i l e g e o f u s i n g the c e n t r e f o r g a t h e r i n g s . $ 5.00 was sent t o t he
C. A. C. f o r membership fees and $ 2.00 t o t h e A g r i c u l t u r a l S c h o l a r s h i p Fund.
One of o u r premium wool b l a n k e t s was g i v e n t o Mr.
a man i n the Howells Lake a r e a , who had h i s house burned l o s i n g a l l t h e c o n t e n t s.
L a y e t t e s were made and s e n t t o U. N. I. C. E. F. and f o r t y - t h r e e
and one h a l f pounds o f c l o t h i n g were g i v e n t o t h e C l o t h i n g Bank i n Red Deer and
s i x t e e n dozen c o o k i e s were sent t o Red Deer t o be put i n w e l f a r e hampers a t C h r i s t mas
time.
M e e t i n g s : We c e l e b r a t e d our s e v e n t h a n n i v e r s a r y i n A p r i l by
h a v i n g a pot l u c k d i n n e r a t Mrs. R. Brown's and the meeting and t e a i n t h e a f t e r noon
w i t h a b i r t h d a y cake h o l d i n g seven c a n d l e s.
F o r the H a n d i c r a f t Tea we became b o l d e r and e n t e r e d t h i r t e en
a r t i c j l l e s . Of t h e s e we woneight f i r s t s , f o u r seconds and one t h i r d .
Mrs. Roy C l u t t o n r e p r e s e n t e d us a t t h e P r o v i n c i a l B i e n n i al
Convention i n Edmonton, June 4.5.6. I t was h e r e the i d e a " Make A l b e r t a
B e a u t i f u l ! " f o r t h e y e a r 1967 was brought forward. She gave us an i n t e r e s t i ng
resume o f t h e c o n v e n t i o n but was d i s a p p o i n t e d t h a t our h i s t o r y d i d not r e c e i v e
a p r i z e as she f e l t i t had been judged under the wrong r u l e s . She thought i t
a good i d e a f o r our W. I. t o buy a n Almey Crab t o make the c o r n e r p l o t near t he
s c h o o l more b e a u t i f u l f o r a c e n t e n n i a l p r o j e c t .
On June 21, Mrs. A. A l l e n was t h e d e l e g a t e sent t o t h e C o n s t i t uency
Conference. Mr. F. P. G a l b r a i t h ' s account of h i s t r i p around the w o r ld
was the h i g h l i g h t . She r e a d the account of i t from the speech g i v e n i n t h e Adv
o c a t e.
Speeches: During the y e a r there were a number o f speeches given.
Our C o n s t i t u e n c y Convener, Mrs. J . M o r r i s r o e , was invited to
v i s i t our b r a n c h . She spoke on " The W. I. a t Work Around the World". At that
time there were 6,000,000 members from 144 s o c i e t i e s i n 36 c o u n t r i e s belonging
to the A. C. W. W.
