of heart trouble — so she's going
out of her way to climb steep staircases,
and do brisk housework.
" I'll be doing all the things I'm
not supposed to do," jokes the 66-
year- old bookkeeper, because her
heart is being monitored on the job
and at home.
The portable halter monitor
Grover wears in a waist pouch
should detect any irregularities
that could crop up when she's
over- exerting herself, so she can
receive treatment.
The Red Deer woman is
among 10 to 20 Central
Albertans who on any given
day have their cardiac rhythm
recorded while performing regular
activities.
The device, the size of a small
head- phone cassette player, has electrodes
that are taped to a patient'

The monitor is worn for a 24-
hour period, and saves people from
being booked into hospital for an
electroc^ Lrxhogram ( ECG) scan. It's
definitely a " fringe benefit" at a
time of budget cuts, said Murray
Yarish, cardiology and respiratory
therapy director at Red Deer
Regional Hospital Centre.
" But that's not this department's
goal," he said. " We're interested
in catching a lot of the
( heart) problems before they
become serious."
At about $ 1,700 each, the
monitors are much cheaper
than $ 15,000 ECG scanners,
which can only test a small
number of people daily.
They are also more effective
at finding irregularities
that aren't chronic problems,
said cardiology supervisor
Vera Krause.
