A correction in last month's
report: The pins presented to four
of the members were for 25 years
membership in WI, not for 25
years perfect attendance.
Pauline Dusyk, Public Health
Nutritionist from the Red Deer
Health Unit was the guest
speaker, whose topic was Active
Living based on the Canada Food
Guide and various related publications.
Her informative presentation
centred around questions
posed by members present.
Dorothy Schalin gave a brief
update on the Regional Landfill
situation. An appeal hearing,
launched against the Stop « . Work
order, was scheduled for May 16,
and Mrs. Schalin asked for a good
attendance to lend support in
opposing continuing work on the
landfill.
Farmers' Market resumes operation
May 20, to Sept 2, 3- 7
p. m. at the Pine Lake Bi- Lo Service
Station.
In lieu of a saleable article, $ 10
will be donated to the sales table
at the AWI Provincial Convention
in Olds.
A Group- of- Five entry will be
made at the Westerner Creative
Arts Competition.
$ 70 will be donated toward the
maintenance of the recycle bins at
the Pine Lake Bi- Lo Service Station.
Comment:
Commencing the second year
of operation, the Laidlaw " Recycle"
( not Garbage) bins at the Pine
Lake Bi- Lo Service Station appear
to be serving their intended purpose.
These bins are financed by
community organizations and are
placed, courtesy of the Bi- Lo Service
Station owners.
Guidelines to be observed are: I
( 1) Tins cans must be clean with
labels removed. Crushing is op- I
tiona).
( 2) Only # 2 plastics are suitable I
for recycling.
Failure to conform to these
guidelines could result in the I
removal of these bins.

Phyllis Graham was the recipient
of the door prize at the very
successful coffee party held at the
Hub, June 1.
The WI Centennial Corner Plot
is sporting blue and white petunias
this year.
An entry will be made in the
Group of Five class at the Westerner
Creative Arts Fair.
The annual jelly project will
continue again this year.
Pine Lake WI will sponsor the
needlecraft class at the Crossroads
Ag Fair in August. The WI and
AWI will sponsor a special flower
arrangement class at the Crossroads
Ag Fair in recognition of the
85th Anniversary of Alberta
Women's Institutes.
Pine Lake WI will provide the
noon lunch forjudges and helpers
at the Crossroads Ag Fair, Aug.

Marilyn Wattenbarger chose
The Family as the theme of her
educational program. The definition
of the family in present day
society has undergone drastic
changes and these changes are
causing perplexing problems in
many areas of our society.
A video of Lillie Clutton's day
at Provincial Convention was
shown before adjournment.
We are pleased to welcome
Sandy Baker Anderson as a new
member.

After the summer break, 11
members were welcomed by
president Irma Lawrence.
Replacing the regular meeting
in August, a surprise pot luck
picnic was enjoyed. This was held
on " The Cliff," a spot overlooking
the northeast end of the lake,
courtesy of Bob and Irma
Lawrence.
Reports, correspondence and
minute- minders were dealt with.
Program was agriculture, by
Marion Brown who spoke on the
changes in the agricultural
community and farming methods.
She explained how farming is
becoming increasingly specialized
and diversified. As an example
she cited Brian and Karen Smith
of Lacombe who are experimenting
with a new high protein, glutin-free
grain, Quinoa.
Also mentioned was the
development of a process to
manufacture pulp from wheat and
flax straw. Flax straw would be
used in the manufacture of
photocopying paper and wheat
straw as a food fibre.

commenced with the repetition of
the Creed and recognition of a
birthday.
Minutes and the financial
report were given and approved.
The Christmas gift to the
Haden WI in Australia will consist
of 12 handmade coasters featuring
the AWI crest as well as one
Horned Owl pin ( our Provincial
bird emblem.)
A report on the organizational
Farmers' Market Association
meeting in Edmonton was
discussed. Bylaws are available
and will be discussed in the future.
Minute- minders were given
and correspondence dealt with.
Directors will obtain
replacements for retiring
Educational Convenors and the
executive will have 1995 programs
prepared for the November
meeting and the Christmas
Supper Committee will have lists
ready for next meeting.
Program was International
Affairs and was the reading of a
letter from Shirley ( Lawrence)
Swanepoel who lives in South
Africa, describing her observations
and participation in the first
democratic election in which the
majority black population had the
right to vote.
