16 A L B E R T A WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
RESOLUTIONS
The following- resolutions were carried. All others were lost and
the Council decided that they should not be printed in this report. So if
your resolution does not appear here, you may know the delegates voted
against it.
1. WHEREAS the huge radium deposits available in Canada are
being given to incorporated private companies, and manufactured for
world consumption, while we, in Canada are appealing for private funds
to make this valuable medical discovery available for suffering humanity;
T H E R E F O R E B E IT R E S O L V E D that this Convention go on record
as desiring Federal Government owned radium for Canada.— Drumheller-
Handhills Constituency Conference. Carried.
2. BE IT RESOLVED that we ask the Alberta Government to
consider formation of Cancer Clinics on the same basis as that of control
of tuberculosis and social diseases, as practiced in this Province.— Drum-hell
er- H an dhills Constituency Conference. Carried.
3. WHEREAS the Dominion and Provincial Governments are
participating in training domestic workers;
AND WHEREAS girls and women waitresses, clerks, etc., are
protected by a Minimum Wage Act;
AND WHEREAS the majority of domestic workers are, today,
exploited by long hours and inadequate remuneration;
B E IT R E S O L V E D that we the delegates of the A. W. I. District No. 4
representing 45 Branches, assembled in Convention March 3rd, 1939, do
respectfully urge the members of the Legislature to enact or amend
legislation to protect the domestic worker.— District No. 4 Conference.
Carried.
4. WHEREAS the findings of the Penal Reform Commission has
recommended that a Board of three be set up to deal with penitentiaries
and jails;
T H E R E F O R E BE IT R E S O L V E D that we request that one of the
three appointed shall be a qualified woman.— Calgary- Okotoks Constituency
Conference. Carried.
5. WHEREAS there are a number of vehicles on the highway after
dark, other than cars, trucks and bicycles;
AND WHEREAS such vehicles have no rear light to warn those
passing same;
T H E R E F O R E B E IT R E S O L V E D that all vehicles be compelled by
law to attach reflectors or other warning light, to prevent accidents.—
Kinsella- Wainwright Constituency Conference.
Moved by Mrs. Morton, seconded by Mrs. MacFarland, that this
resolution be amended by adding the words, " on all Public Roads in Alberta"
after " Resolved that all vehicles." Resolution as amended carried.
