M I N U T E S O F T H E A N N U A L C O N V E N T I O N O F A L B E R T A W O M E N ' S I N S T I T U T E S , H E L D IN C A L G A R Y , M A Y 28th, 29th a n d 30th, 1924 W i t h the President, IViis. J . N . B e a u b i e r , i n the chair, the a n i m a l three- day C o n v e n t i o n of A l b e r t ; . W o m e n ' s I n s t i t u t e s was declared open p r o m p t l y at 9 o ' c l o ck a. m., o n M a y 28, 1924, when n e a r l y three h u n d r e d delegates f r om alt part* of the P r o v i n c e a s s e m b l e d i n t h e P a f l i s e r H o t e l for the o p e n i n g session. T h e session oj> ened w i t h " O C a n a d a " and the solemn i n v o c a t i o n and creed. T h e r e was much business to be done but a l l went t h r o u g h w i t h such despatch that the delegates were alert e v e r y m i n u t e . Just before the business began, M r s . G a r r a d , President of the C a l g a r v B r a n c h , presented M r s . B e a u b i e r w i t h a beautiful bouquet of p i n k c a r n a t i o n s . T h w was a h a p p y b e g i n n i n g t o a v e r y h a p p y C o n v e n t i o n. T h e f o l l o w i n g C o m m i t t e e o n r e s o l u t i o n s was a p p o i n t e d b y t h e c h a i r : M c s d a m es Rogers, S i e w a r t . G r e v e t t a n d G o o d a l l. T h e Scerctary- Tmuwirex gave her report which appears on page 13. On m o t i o n of M r s . R o g e r s , seconded b y M r s . M a c A r t h u r , this report was accepted. T h e President followed w i t h her report which appears i n f u l l on page 16. On m o t i o n of M r s . T o w n s , seconded b y M r s . R o s s , t h i s report was accepted. T h e Secretary read a letter from M r s . F . \ Y . Hughes, former D i r e c t o r for D i s t r i c t N o . 4, e x t e n d i n g greetings and best wishes for a successful C o n v e n t i o n. M r s . Hughes is at present v i s i t i n g in the U n i t e d . States. A cable was also read f r om M r s . C . A . G a t e s who is o n a visit to her o l d home i n E n g l a n d . Mrs. Gates has been asked by the A d v i s o r y B o a r d to act as our r e p r e s e n t a t i v e when v i s i t i ng i n s t i t u t e s i n t h e o l d l a u d . M r s . W . B a r s s , o f D e l i a . C o n v e n e r of t h e S t a n d i n g C o m m i t t e e o n I m m i g r a t i on r e p o r t e d b r i e f l y . The usual report from the D e p a r t m e n t at O t t a w a had not yet eome to h a n d but a r r i v e d l a t e r a n d w i l l be f o u n d on page 28. M r s . B a r s s stressed the point that it is v e r y necessary for the C a n a d i a n born to set a good example to the new comer i n o u r l a n d . On m o t i o n of M r s . G r e v e t t . seconded by M r s . W o o d , t h i * nejiort was accepted. M r s . W m . S t e w a r t , o f P e a r c R i v e r , r e p o r t e d for the pioneer I n s t i t u t e s in D i s trict No. I. t e l l i n g how the women of this n o r t h e r n c o u n t r y are b r a v e l y c a r r y i ng on despite discouragements and i n the face of u serious exodus of settlers. Several I n t i t u l e s that had been forced t o close are now re- organized a n d are d o i n g excellent work. This report appears o n page 19. T h e report of M r s . C . A . ( t a l e s , of S f n n v P l a i n , D i r e c t o r for D i s t r i c t N o . 2, t o l d of a v a r i e t y o f g o o d w o r k s a c c o m p l i s h e d b y the i n s t i t u t e s i n this D i s t r i c t and w i l l be f o u n d o n page 20. T h e afternoon session opened at 2 o ' c l o c k w i t h M r s . B e a u b i e r a n d M r s . H u y ck of S t r o m c p r e s i d i n g ottieers. Mrs. B e a u b i e r e x p l a i n e d t h a t o w i n g to i l l h e a l t h M r s . M f C l u n g d i d not feel that she c o u l d be w i t h us this year but offered to come i l Iter absence would upset the p r o g r a m . The delegates were u n a n i m o u s i n e x c u s i ng M r s . M c C l u n g and i m m e d i a t e l y arranged for a bouquet of roses to be sent her a l o n g w i t h a letter of s y m p a t h y and regret e x p r e s s i n g also their best a n d kindest, wishes. M i s . U. E . W o o d of H t o n y P l a i n , i n a b r i g h t a n d v i v a c i o u s m a n n e r i n t r o d u c ed the discussion i n the P r e s i d e n t ' s H o u r .
