r a n t s coming into the d i s t r i c t . Other branches have formed parent- teacher
a s s o c i a t i o n s and are a r r a n g i n g for p u b l i c s p e a k i n g contests a n d school fairs. Each
I n s t i t u t e has C o n v e n e r s of S t a n d i n g C o m m i t t e e s.
D o n a t i o n s have been g i v e n to Olds O r p h a n s ' Home, P r o h i b i t i o n C a m p a i g n,
R e d C r o s s , a n d C h i l d r e n ' s R e l i e f i n the Near E a s t , also m u c h local relief.
T h e Conference, w i t h fifty- three attending, was held at C a r s t a i r s . Then*
were s p l e n d i d reports a n d the p r o g r am was kept u p to the m i n u t e b o t h b e g i n n i n g and
c l o s i n g o n t i m e.
O l d s West C o n s t i t u e n c y . The I n s t i t u t e s i n t h i s C o n s t i t u e n c y also h a v e their
C o n v e n e r s of S t a n d i n g C o m m i t t e e s a n d report many helpful papers a n d addresses.
One paper on Y o r k , E n g l a n d , was i l l u s t r a t e d w i t h photographs, another on A z t ec
I n d i a n s and I n d i a n C r a f t was also i l l u s t r a t e d . As these I n s t i t u t e s are mostly
r u r a l t h e y are each a great s o c i a l f a c t o r i n t h e i r r e s p e c t i v e c o m m u n i t i e s . C o m m u n i ty
g a t h e r i n g s arid p i c n i c s a r e reported, one h o l d i n g t h e i r p i c n i c o n J u l y 1st a n d " having
a p a t r i o t i c p r o g r a m . First a i d k i t s have been p l a c e d i n e a c h of t w o schools. C h r i s t mas
treats were given to c h i l d r e n and c l o t h i n g s u p p l i e d to the needy. Home
B u r e a u Courses i n B a s k e t r y a n d S e w i n g are reported.
T h e Conference h e l d a t E a g l e H i l l was not well a t t e n d e d on account of heavy
f a l l of wet snow m a k i n g the roads almost i m p a s s i b l e.
R e d D e e r and I n n i s f a i l W e s t C o n s t i t u e n c y . Assisting h o s p i t a l w i t h donations
of sewing and cash, i m p r o v i n g cemetery, helping a g r i c u l t u r a l and schools, fairs,
b u i l d i n g school k i t c h e n s , p r o v i d i n g hot lunches, paper towels, wash basins, etc.
i n s t a l l i n g e l e c t r i c light p l a n t in c o m m u n i t y h a l l , h o l d i n g O l d T i m e r s ' R e - u n i o n,
C o m m u n i t y C h r i s t m a s Trees and h e l p i n g R e d Cross are some of the a c t i v i t i es
r e p o r t e d f r om the v a r i o u s I n s t i t u t e s i n t h i s C o n s t i t u e n c y . A l l h a v e well balanced
programs.
T h e Conference was held at I n n i s f a i l w i t h fifty attending.

one a t L e e d a l e a n d one at M i r r o r . The branches i n t h i s C o n s t i t u e n c y h a v e g i v en
m u c h to c h a r i t y a n d m a n y donations to o r g a n i z a t i o n s w i t h i n and w i t h o u t the dist
r i c t . Sunshine C l u b , E d m o n t o n , R e d Cross, J u n i o r R e d Cross, Japanese R e l i e f,
churches and hospitals have all received assistance. One branch has organized
a s e w i n g c i r c l e . The p r o g r am i n one b r a n c h often takes the f o rm of r o u n d table
t a l k s on p r a c t i c a l s u b j e c t s p e r t a i n i n g to e v e r y d a y life, another has first aid t a l k s.
A n o t h e r b r a n c h whose members are spread over wide t e r r i t o r y and who are therefore
u n a b l e to meet r e g u l a r l y h a v e o c c a s i o n a l meetings when t h e y b r i n g t h e i r baskets
a n d babies a n d m a k e a d a y of i t . This i n s t i t u t e is t h e s o c i a l l i f e of t h e c o m m u n i t y.

r e c r e a t i o n g r o u n d and tennis equipment for c h i l d r e n and co- operated with c i ty
c o u n c i l i n a c l e a n - u p c a m p a i g n . They p l a c e d f u r n i t u r e i n a c l u b r o om i n w h i c h t h ey
h o l d their meetings. One b r a n c h reports p l a c i n g a n e x h i b i t of f a n c y work, canned
f r u i t a n d vegetables at the l o c a l f a i r . T h i s e x h i b i t was e n t i r e l y the work of r u r al
women and was h i g h l y commended. I believe the W . I . C o n s t i t u e n c y C o n v e n er
of A g r i c u l t u r e was responsible for t h i s e x h i b i t . One b r a n c h is c o n c e n t r a t i n g t h e ir
energies to p a y i n g for t h e i r h a l l w h i c h is p r o v i n g a great c o m m u n i t y benefit.
