As C h a i r m a n of H o m e E c o n o m i c s , for t h e T a b e r C o n s t i t u e n c y , M r s . A l e x a n d e r gave a most i n s t r u c t i v e address a n d made an appeal for " T h e U s e o f M o r e M i l k ." I came across an advertisement of a w e l l - k n o w n Insurance C o m p a n y the other day,— the advice of a famous m e d i c a l m a n had been sought, a n d his p r e s c r i p t i on was, " L a c p u r u m ( pure m i l k ) — t o be t a k e n freely and o f t e n — w i t h meals a n d between meals." This p r e s c r i p t i o n was c a l c u l a t e d to be w o r t h £ 219,000,000 many times over to the Insurance C o m p a n y , w h y s h o u l d it not be of p r o p o r t i o n a t e value t o a n y one of us? A n d Ladies, I wish y o u t o k n o w t h a t it was t h r o u g h our P r e s i d e n t ' s unselfish generosity and sincere interest i n our O r g a n i z a t i o n of w h i c h we have the honor of h a v i n g M r s . B e a u b i e r as president, that we were able t o have the benefit of her guidance and were p r i v i l e g e d t o enjoy her presence and hear her s p l e n d i d address at our D i s t r i c t Conference. I ask y o u , w o u l d y o u w i s h to h a v e a Conference w i t h o ut y o u r President being there i n person? No, a n d neither d i d we. A n d we wish her to k n ow h ow m u c h we a p p r e c i a t e d her s t a n d i n g b y us and c o m i n g e v e n at her own expense. The subject A i r s . B e a u b i e r chose was " S i m p l i c i t y of L i v i n g " and indeed not o n l y t h o s e a t t e n d i n g t h e Conference b u t the people of L e t h b r i d g e who were there i n force enjoyed the p r i v i l e g e of l i s t e n i n g to t h i s excellent address w h i c h was g r e a t l y a p p r e c i a t e d b y a l l . N o r is i t o n l y the benefits, the i n s p i r a t i o n , t h e i n f o r m a t i o n a c c r u i n g t o us f r om the addresses a n d i n s t r u c t i o n we received at the Conference that we bear i n m i nd f c r l o n g after, but also the remembrance of t h e pleasures tendered us, the greetings, the m u s i c , the d e l i g h t f u l e n t e r t a i n m e n t s , the h o s p i t a l i t y of the ladies of the C i v ic C l u b and the L o c a l C o u n c i l of W o m e n , the h e a r t y welcome to the c i t y . A l l of these we c a r r y i n our hearts l o n g after the C o n v e n t i o n is passed, a n d t h e g o o d - w i l l, the s p i r i t of u n i t y so i n v a l u a b l e i n a n o r g a n i z a t i o n. I t was felt b y the Conference that the D i s t r i c t Conference c o u l d not be d i s pensed w i t h a n d the c o r d i a l i n v i t a t i o n of the M a y o r of M a c l e o d to h o l d our next D i s t r i c t Conference there was accepted u n a n i m o u s l y. The a p p o i n t m e n t was f o l l o w e d b y a general r e - o r g a n i z a t i o n of the i m m i g r a t i o n m a c h i n e r y w i t h a v i ew to p r o m o t i n g efficiency b o t h in C a n a d a and i n the other countries i n w h i c h the C a n a d i a n I m m i g r a t i on D e p a r t m e n t operates. One of the first steps was the c r e a t i o n of a L a n d S e t t l e m e n t B r a n c h o f the I m m i g r a t i o n D e p a r t m e n t , i n w h i c h the staff of the S o l d i e r S e t t l e m e n t B o a r d is u t i l i z e d . The duties of the L a n d Settlement B o a r d are to ensure n ew settlers being d i r e c t e d to lands where t h e y can have the best o p p o r t u n i t i e s of success, to safeg u a r d t h em f r om e x p l o i t a t i o n i n the purchase price of farms w h i c h t h e y buy, to conduct surveys w i t h a v i e w t o m a k i n g o p p o r t u n i t y r e a d i l y a v a i l a b l e to the newcomer and to place r e l i a b l e a n d d i s i n t e r e s t e d advice at his c o m m a n d . The social life of the new s e t t l e r is also r e c o g n i z e d t h r o u g h an endeavour to give i m p e t u s to c o m m u n i t y o r g a n i z a t i o n s . In c o n n e c t i o n w i t h t h e L a n d S e t t l e m e n t B r a n c h a d v i s o ry boards have been a p p o i n t e d c o m p r i s i n g men well i n f o r m e d c o n c e r n i n g local cond i t i o n s i n the v a r i o u s d i s t r i c t s , t o advise o n the v a l u e a n d s u i t a b i l i t y of l a n d s offered for sale t o the i n c o m i n g settlers. T h r o u g h its D e p a r t m e n t of I m m i g r a t i o n and C o l o n i z a t i o n the Government i s m a k i n g a s p e c i a l a n d v e r y r e a l e n d e a v o r t o o b t a i n d e s i r a b l e i m m i g r a n t s i n g r e a t er numbers t h a n heretofore.
