WOMEN'S

• W. I. guests Helen Vinceni and Roberta Peters to
J their " poi luck supper and hear the presentation
of Districl II! Director, Gloria Coates. Ms Coates
related her first hand experiences as she attended
the ACWW 25th Triennial Conference in Turku,
Finland June 2- 10, 2007. She was thrilled to visit
this Scandinavian country that lies primarily above
the 60th parallel. The two official languages are
Finnish and Swedish with the younger population
fluent in English. The 5.3 million population has a
density of seven per square kilometer 2/ 3 live in the
urban areas and 1/ 3 in the rural area where 6 % of the
land mass is cultivated. Finland is environmentally
conscious preserving its thousands of lakes and
islands. Agriculture and forestry make up the main
occupations but technology' is exemplified by the
Nokia cell phone company. 97% of the people use
cell phones Education is held in high esteem in a
country with compulsory education for all children
7- 16 years of age. Twenty universities and twenty-nine
polytechs meet the need for higher educational
training.
The conference theme. Winning the Way for Women".
dwelt on equality, development and peace World
President Ursula Goh said the tsunami challenged
the world women and urged everyone to continue
the support of women who are developing new
skills to cope with the tragedy. Mrs. Goh will serve
an additional three years. Margaret Yetman from
Newfoundland is Canada's representative Members
of the Pine Lake W. l. each contributed $ 4.50 toward
the ACWW Pennies for Friendship fund.
Branch members made plans to attend the annual
Red Deer Centre Constituency Conference October
13, 2007 at Leslieville Community Hall. Members
will bring display items and a gift basket around the
theme. Health. Home Ec. and Social Services.
Plans are in place for the upcoming annuaTChnsuija
Family Supper and the Community Race Nite event.
