LIVING WITH DIABETES
was the program
presented by Colleen Preston
of Innisfail to the
Pine Lake Women's Institute.
Millie Munro.
Branch Health Convener,
inlroduced Colleen, sister
of member Teressa Greening,
who has managed her
Type I diabetes for over 30
years to live a very productive
life. She explained
the three types of diabetes:
Type I ( under 40
years). Type II lover 40
years), and Gestation diabetes.
Diabetes is the
t h i rd leading cause of
death in Canada with
approximately 1.5 million
Canadians diagnosed with
the disease and 750,000
have the disease and don't
know it.
Colleen outlined the diabetic
symptoms but
stressed " knowing your
body" and control with
education, diet, exercise,
medication, monitoring,
weight control and coping.
Ms. Preston mentioned
recent research to better
health. The ladies appreciated
the very frank and
informative presentation.
President Kathleen
Lawrence congratulated
the branch members for
100^ participation in the
District HI Workshop held
at the HUB Community
Centre, March 15, 2001
and Marilyn Wattenbarger
thanked the members fur
all their work for a very
successful day. Approximately
100 ladies attended
the Central Alberta W 1
Conference.
Marion Brown, Agriculture
Convener, handed out
posters, garden club rules
and regulations for the
2001 Garden Club sponsorship.
Four classes from
pre- school to open ( above
13 yrs.) will grow flowers
and various vegetables
with Gourds being the special
class to be judged at
the annual Halloween party.

Plans were finalized for
the upcoming Constituency
Handicraft Display and
Tea on A p r i l 28 at the Red
Deer Museum 2 - 4 p. m.
The Newsletter from
AWI Office gave members
information regarding the
AWI Convention May 29-
31, 2001 at the Camrose
Norseman Hotel, Resolutions,
Home & Country
and a message from AWI
President Maxean Brigley.
Members emptied their
stockings to which dimes
are contributed each
month, and the proceeds
will be forwarded to the
AWI Office to defray mailing
costs.

sponsor the local FARMERS'
M A R K E T June 15 to
August 31, 3 p. m. to 5: 30
p. m. at the BiLo Service
Station. Our market will
appear in the COUNTRY
REGISTER.
Members were reminded
of the annual road side
clean up Saturday. April
28, 2001. Also notice of
the Balmoral W. I. 75th
Anniversary Tea on May 6
and the Hillsdown W. I.
Strawberry Tea on May
26, 2001.
