J a n u a r y meeting report

What is the meaning of
citizenship to you? That is
the question citizenship and
legislation educational convener,
Kathleen Lawrence,
posed to the Pine Lake
membership at its regular
monthly meeting. A l l in
attendance agreed citizenship
means a sense of
belonging. Symbols of this
belonging can take the form
of a flag, tomb of the
unknown soldier or as close
to living as a home, garden,
church or community. Each
member traced her ancestral
roots by placing a colored
thread on a map of the
world depicting the multi
cultural nature of Canada.
Kathleen Lawrence displayed
the engraved chrome
bon bon dish appropriately
heart shaped from the Heart
and Stroke Foundation for
25 years of service to the
organization. It will be on
display at the regular Heart
Fund card party on Feb. 24.
It was decided
not to sponsor the
parenting work-,
shop as outlined
by Connie
Morgan at
the December,
2000 meeting. A
committee was set up to
look into the possibility of
promoting a self help parenting
session.
PLWI is sponsoring a
recycling tour at the Canadian
Waste facility at 6207
47 A Ave., Red Deer on
January 23 at 11: 00 a. m.
Anyone interested is welcome
to attend.
The roll call was
answered by the six members
around the citizenship
theme. Millie Munro displayed
a stamp
depicting " The
Year of the
S n a k e " .

the story of
Anna Kroeker.
farmer in
Saskatchewan, and her fight
with Revenue Canada over
Section 31 of the tax act.
The February meeting
will feature a pot luck supper
at 6: 30 p. m. with special
guest Constituency Convener
Marilyn Wattenbarger.

New women's institute Girl's Club
submitted by Dianne
Buyks
January 20, 2001, was
the founding meeting of a
new W. I. G i r l ' s club. It
started at 10: 00 a. m. in the
Cottonwood Gordon Hall
and there were 18 members
present. The leader and
organizer was Wilma
Hansen. Executive were
nominated and voted for.
The results were Susanne
Hansen as president, Kier-sten
Nielsen as vice- president,
Katelin Cunningham
as secretary, and Maria
Hansen as the treasurer. A
round table talk was held on
the subject of what kind of
crafts you would like to do
and why. We did an origami
craft and made a Valentine's
Day card. For lunch,
ham and cheese melts were
made. Before eating, we
also learned a tiered napkin
pattern. Everyone helped
clean up after our delicious
lunch. Our meeting was
adjourned at 2: 00 p. m. It
was a fun filled day and
hopefully the first of many
more to come.
The next meeting will be
February 17, 2001.
