PINE LAKE Women's Institute submitted bv: E. Manon Broun Branch Life Memberships were awarded to Doris Warke in person and Ella Sawyer in abstentia at the March meeting of the Pine Lake Women's Institute. Both ladies are charter members of the branch and have served the community with this organization for over fifty continuous years. They have held executive positions at branch level and supported the organization at all levels. Doris Warke has served as Constituency Convener for Red Deer Centre and Educational Convener at provincial level. Congratulations were extended over birthday cake and tea as both ladies celebrate their eightieth birthdays this month. Husbands joined in the party as well as did Doris' daughter, Susan Cumby, from Comox. B. C. The Pine Lake Women's Institute branch has adopted the theme, " Climate Change - Are you doing your bit? " in this International Polar Year. Shrinking artic ice. northern ice shelves collapsing into the sea, the threat to polar bears as access to their hunting and breeding grounds diminish are all being discussed and studied. The ladies all participate in every day recycling acts in their homes to better the environment. At the March meeting Pres. Marilyn Wattenbarger posed the question, " What impact has solar irradiance of increased solar activity on global warming?" We also asked, " What is the impact of our world population of 6.3 billion on our earth's resources?" Marion Brown read correspondence from Australian pen friends. The Haden area near Toowoomba, has suffered sever drought for five years. " Level Five" water restrictions are in place with all dams under 18% capacity. There is no watering of gardens so trees and shrubs have to make it on their own. S295.00 was contributed to the Heart Fund through the annual Heart Fund card party as well as other community donations. Doris Warke informed the branch of changes in the Handicraft list as members prepare for the Constituency Handicraft Tea on April 28 at the Red Deer and District Museum. Plans were also formulated to participate in the 60th anniversary celebrations for Ridgewood W. I. On March 24 and District III Workshop on March 31 at Ponoka. .
