PINE LAKE
Women's
Institute
submitted bv: E. Manon Broun
Branch Life Memberships were
awarded to Doris Warke in person
and Ella Sawyer in abstentia at the
March meeting of the Pine Lake
Women's Institute. Both ladies are
charter members of the branch and
have served the community with
this organization for over fifty
continuous years. They have held
executive positions at branch level
and supported the organization at all
levels. Doris Warke has served as
Constituency Convener for Red
Deer Centre and Educational
Convener at provincial level.
Congratulations were extended over
birthday cake and tea as both ladies
celebrate their eightieth birthdays
this month. Husbands joined in the
party as well as did Doris' daughter,
Susan Cumby, from Comox. B. C.
The Pine Lake Women's Institute
branch has adopted the theme, "
Climate Change -
Are you doing your bit? " in this
International Polar Year. Shrinking
artic ice. northern ice shelves
collapsing into the sea, the threat to
polar bears as access to their
hunting and breeding grounds
diminish are all being discussed and
studied. The ladies all participate in
every day recycling acts in their
homes to better the environment. At
the March meeting Pres. Marilyn
Wattenbarger posed the question,
" What impact has solar irradiance
of increased solar activity on global
warming?" We also asked, " What is
the impact of our world population
of 6.3 billion on our earth's
resources?" Marion Brown read
correspondence from Australian pen
friends. The Haden area near
Toowoomba, has suffered sever
drought for five years. " Level Five"
water restrictions are in place with
all dams under 18% capacity. There
is no watering of gardens so trees
and shrubs have to make it on their
own.
S295.00 was contributed to the Heart
Fund through the annual Heart Fund
card party as well as other
community donations.
Doris Warke informed the branch of
changes in the Handicraft list as
members prepare for the
Constituency Handicraft Tea on
April 28 at the Red Deer and
District Museum. Plans were also
formulated to participate in the 60th
anniversary celebrations for
Ridgewood W. I. On March 24 and
District III Workshop on March 31
at Ponoka. .
