Home and Country Fall 2007 5 District Three Gloria Coates, Director WI is Alive in Five Brenda Willsie, Director A fter our return from Turku Finland we were right into haying season. The town of Alix celebrated their 100 Anniversary. The Alix WI branch served coffee and muffins one afternoon. I put a WI float in the parade. Neil and I attended the “ Passion Play” in Drumheller. What a wonderful play. I would certainly recommend you attend if you get the chance. We had different functions at the campsite and tried to get some camping in. Another highlight of our summer was my grandson’s wedding where I made the bouquets and the cake. I attended the WI Council Meeting in September. At the Council Meeting we updated some of the forms. When you receive the new forms please ensure that you destroy the old ones. If your branch is interested in making a resolution please note that the deadline is December 31. I will be sending out a report to my branches. We finally got the combining done and most of the bales are in. My garden kept me busy and the jams and pickles are made. We have so much to be thankful for. Hope everyone had a beautiful harvest. Look forward to attending the different WI functions and receiving the CC reports on what the branches are doing. The IODE once again asked us to come in and take the excess clothing. I delivered over 18 bags to Brigantea Place, a women’s shelter in Camrose. Thanks to Kanata WI for helping with this. Reverend Lesley Hand would like to thank everyone who helped to make book bags. They can still use touques, scarves and mitts. It would be very much appreciated if you could include a baby blanket or quilt in the layette packages. I took up something that Lacombe 4 Point donated. With the Christmas Season coming up I wish you all Season’s Greetings and may the true spirit of Christmas bring you Peace and Happiness. wi F all is here and it seems as though it is time to celebrate in District 5. By the time you read this I will have had the privilege of joining Mary Riley Women’s Institute to celebrate their 90th Anniversary. It is a special day attending this anniversary as Mary Riley Branch activities were my very first taste of Women’s Institute. My mother took me to meetings at this branch before I started elementary school. I have vivid memories of this branch celebrating their 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th and now their 90th anniversaries. I would like to extend my personal congratulations along with congratulations from all of the members of Alberta Women’s Institutes to these members on this marvelous occasion. The community east of Innisfail where the Milnerton Branch serve has enjoyed 90 years of continuous service from this Branch. I have recently been treated to a lovely afternoon of celebration in honour of this branch’s 90th Anniversary. The Crossroads Hall was the scene of a celebration with a lot of reminiscing about the fabulous contribution this branch has made to the community in the name of Home and Country. I would like to extend my personal congratulations along with congratulations from all of the members of Alberta Women’s Institutes. Ladies you have done a wonderful job of improving life for women and their families in your community. The next thing on my agenda for this issue is I need to hear from all of the Constituency Conveners regularly once a month. It is very important that you send your report to me so I can send the information of what is happening along to the next level. 2008 is election year, and we need a new District 5 Director as my term of office will finish at the Provincial Convention. I know that there are many members in District 5 who are capable of doing this job. If you are interested in letting your name stand for this position and would like more information please contact me. We also have a few other positions that will need to be filled this year so if you are interested in doing a wonderful volunteer job that has a few little perks in life just contact me or the provincial office to get more information about what is available. I have held a number of provincial positions over the last few years and I have found that the rewards of knowledge gained, personal growth and the new friends you meet and make along the way far outweigh the work that is required. Until next time! wi
