Home and Country Summer 2007 Resolutions Continued recommends contacting Doug Neis at Alberta Environment. Copies of the letter to the Hon. Rob Renner on the above two resolutions were sent to the Hon. Ted Morton, Provincial Minister of Sustainable Resources, the Hon. Loyala Hearn, Federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and the Hon. John Baird, Federal Minister of the Environment but to date no response has been received from any of them. A letter was also sent to the Hon. Luke Ouellette, Provincial Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation regarding our resolution on fines for highway littering but again to date no response has been received. Copies of all resolutions were also sent to the Alberta Liberal and Alberta New Democratic Parties. If you know any of the above Ministers who have not yet replied to our resolutions, please contact them and indicate your support for these resolutions. My term as Resolutions Chair will end at next year's Convention, so if this position interests you please contact Darlene Wicks or the AWI Office. If you would like further information on what is involved, I would be happy to talk to you! wi Agriculture ACWW Conference Finland Gloria Coates T he 25th Triennial ACWW Conference was held at the Turku Fair and Congress Centre. The theme was: Winning the Way for Women. The Agriculture Committee was chaired by Jenny Mitchell of New Zealand. Other members on the committee were: Gunhild Haugum from Norway At the first meeting she was elected Vice Chairperson. Gunhild spoke of going into farming. They had done all the research into the financial aspects but after three years they rented out their land and both went to work. Thea Huijberts van Oers from the Netherlands She represented the ACWW at the World Water Congress in the Netherlands in 2005. She was also able to attend the 4th World Water Forum in Mexico in 2006. The four Netherlands Societies put forth a resolution to the United Nations for integrated Water Resources Management. This includes sanitation, access to safe drinking water, and water for food and ecosystems based on cooperation with all stakeholders. There can be no solution to water issues without tackling agriculture and poverty. Cecilia Makota from Zambia She is 79 years old and help is needed with the grass roots of farming. They need credit to buy things that they need. They lobbied the government to help them buy seeds. They have set up a processing facility for garden produce. They were successful in lobbying the government to provide food packs to the poorest. Every Tuesday they sell their produce at a vegetable market. Loy Walker from the United States (Iowa) She runs a combined farm which feeds cows and pigs. Obesity is a big problem in the USA. Insurance policy premiums are now based on your weight. Keep track of your body mass index. She heads up a team giving seminars on nutrition, exercise and diabetes. Resolution 5 was on obesity awareness and Recommendation 1 was to fight against type 2 diabetes. Elsie Brown from Scotland She said that it takes 800 acres to make a living. Contracts for products are not paying as much today. Prices for land have held and she is raising pigs for income. The price of corn has doubled because of the bio-fuel plants starting up. Fixing up cottages for tourism is costing too much. If it was not for government subsidies farmers would be out of business. The next ACWW Conference will be held in Hot Springs, Arkansas, USA. wi Education Fund (formerly known as the Save the Sight Fund). Pennies for Friendship was established in 1933 and launched in 1936. It is used to cover costs which enable us to support and monitor projects. All investments are in an ethical portfolio. Unfortunately The Countrywoman magazine only has a circulation of 3,500 which is too small to interest advertising by worldwide companies. The P & P committee is responsible for publishing The Countrywoman, the ACWW website, the Annual Report, the history book, and all promotional material, including folders and decals. A new development is a power point presentation which can be e-mailed to any member or sent on disc, and can be used to promote ACWW in local areas. For me, this was an enjoyable conference and a time to renew friendships I have made at ACWW Conferences and while representing Canada on the ACWW Board, and also a time to make new friends and to see something of the corner of Finland where the conference was held. wi ACWW Conference D Elizabeth Rushton uring the ACWW Triennial Conference I attended the Finance Committee and the Promotion and Publications Committee (commonly known as P & P) Workshops. The Finance Committee has four members and is chaired by the Treasurer. The various trust funds include; The Lady Aberdeen Trust Fund used for home economic and rural community welfare projects, the Elsie Zimmern Memorial Trust used for social welfare and the Nutrition 7
