Home and Country Spring 2008 District Three Gloria Coates, Director W hat a busy time since my last report. I attended a supper meeting at Pine Lake. They had made a motion to disband their branch. I gave them information on the options they had once they disbanded. I am pleased to see that a lot of the ladies are joining different branches or becoming associate members. Their concern was that the names of departed members go into the Book of Remembrance. The Red Deer Constituency Conference was held on a beautiful fall day at Leslieville, Alberta. With such a lovely day they had an excellent turnout. The conference was hosted by Lacombe 4 Point WI and Leslieville WI, and it was chaired by Marcella Basco and Helen Williams. Branches attending were Balmoral, Lacombe 4 Point, Leslieville, Ridgewood and Pine Lake Women's Institutes. Lacombe 4 Point invited me to their meeting where I gave them an update on what is new in WI. Angus Ridge and Half Way Grove invited me to their meetings. Their concern was having to join another constituency. They were hoping they could stay in their current one. Bashaw WI had their Christmas dinner meeting and served angel food cake and strawberries at the Lodge. Neil and I were pleased to attend. Alix WI had a successful Christmas farmers' market. They will be having an Easter farmers' market on March 14, 2008. They also served 80 seniors a delicious Christmas dinner. My District workshop will be held on April 5, 2008 at the Kozy Corner in Lacombe. We are still involved with the sale of Watkins products. You can see their Canadian Catalogue on line at WatkinsOnline.com. Use Account #334237 when you are ordering. My term as District 3 Director will end in June. Please send nominations to Faye Mayberry at R. R. #4, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 5E4. District Four Titia Piera, Director A ll eight branches, large and small, are still active. The Langdon branch, which owns its own hall, is an asset to the town. It is raising funds for a new furnace and a new hot water tank. They will be hosting the Bow Valley Constituency Conference in April 2008, although at a different location because of the extra space needed for the handicraft display. The Chinook Constituency Conference will be held in May at Burdett with the assistance of the Bow Island branch. Handicraft displays are getting different treatment in each Constituency. Some are using hired judges, some are not. One had a few historical handicraft items displayed. Another had an abundance of plants. International affairs: the Irvine branch was raising funds for school uniforms for 100 children in Malawi. Health: at least three branches raised funds for cancer. Last year well over $10,000 was collected. The provincial project "Adopt a Village" received a lot of clothing and many book bags. Social services have extended to the respective towns and villages, creating new special events and participation in existing ones. Burdett is active in plans for the 95th Anniversary of their town this year. They are also getting ready for a quilt raffle. Education had a lot of interest. The Glendale branch distributed eight of the books "Many and Remarkable" to schools and libraries. Agriculture was represented by Institutes growing roses, learning about grain crops, visiting the historical Mormon farmhouse in Stirling and learning about the modification of food for health and profit. 5
