Our Branch presented a Life Membership to Freeda to honour her 80 years of service, dedication and faithfulness. Aids the Greatest Health Crisis Charmaine Wood, Irvine W.I. Imagine in a 747 crashing every hour, every day, every week of the year, killing all aboard. That is the toll which the AIDS pandemic takes, killing 354 people per hour world-wide. That is one death every ten seconds. It is the most severe health crisis in human history. Now imagine an African single mother, HIV positive, with two children of her own and caring as well for three orphans or an old granny, in poor health, with motherless grandchildren dependent upon her or a dying patient, without modern medical facilities. This is the human face of AIDS. Today over 40 million people have HIV/AIDS, with five million newly infected and three million deaths in 2003. That is 14,000 new cases per day, 95 percent of them in developing countries. Seventy percent of worldwide HIV cases are in sub-Saharan Africa, more than half of them women, most of whom are faithful to their husbands. The toll on African society is terrible. The most experienced workers are taken hampering the economy. Husbands and wives are taken, destroying families and leaving hosts of widows and orphans. Young girls are brutally raped because of the mistaken belief that sex with a virgin will cure one of AIDS. How many of us are aware of this carnage, and concerned enough to try to help? `What is wrong with the world? People are dying in numbers that are the stuff of science fiction. Millions of human beings are at risk. Communities, families, mothers, fathers, children are like shards of humanity caught in the maelstrom of destruction .....Is that not enough to ignite the conscience of the world?' This is the cry of Stephen Lewis, United Nations Envoy for HIV/AIDS. Our branch of the W.I. having some raffle profits to distribute decided to do our tiny bit to help. We donated some money to a faith-based group which mobilizes the churches of southern Africa, which constitute a major social force into an antiAIDS campaign. Not much but I am glad we could do it.wi Gertrude Ethel Pratt 1915 2004 Gertrude passed away at the Didsbury Health Care Centre on January 4, 2004.
