Home and Country Summer 2005 ACWW News Mildred Keith Erland Lee Award Recipient Grant Bird Jackson Women's Institute T The Lorgot Project. The Women's Cooperative Farmers and Marketing Society. he Jackson Women's Institute nominated Grant Bird the 2005 recipient of the Erland Lee Award of Appreciation. Grant's mother, Elma Bird, is a charter member of the Jackson W.I. and Grant grew up in W.I. traditions and aware of the importance of the organization. On his marriage to Dorit, he became a W.I. husband counted on for a helping hand, support and encouragement. Setting up, taking down, moving tables Grant is there to help. He delivers items to the Women's Shelter, also food and money to the local food bank at Christmas. T he ACWW Board Meetings were a very enlightening experience for me as your Canadian President. We have started a new triennium and with that say goodbye to old projects and we start to look for new projects. With a new trimester comes new officers and new ideas. Even though we have many of the same problems around the world, poverty, hunger, sickness and lack of education we must find new ways to face them. Prior to the Board Meeting the committees hold their meetings. They are United Nations, Projects, Promotion and Publications, Agriculture and Finance. Besides the chairpersons of these committees the other Board members include the World President, Deputy President, Secretary, Treasurer and the nine area Presidents. I have selected three projects as my first, second and third choices for this triennium in Canada. My first choice is nutrition and catering project in Tanzania. The purpose of this project is to train women in nutrition and catering skills. The beneficiaries are KIMAKO who have assessed the feasibility of the scheme. Any profits they make will be used to expand the business and improve the quality of life for their families. The whole community will benefit because they will use part of the profit to promote health and education for child survival. I hope that you will support this project. Our goal is to raise the $7,000 which you voted to commit to an international project at the post conference area meeting. Canadian Societies were very generous with our last projects. The photo is of the Women Cooperative Farmers and Marketing Society which you financially supported. In response to the Tsunami Disaster a disaster relief fund has been set up for such situations so that our members may assist in rebuilding. When you send money for this relief work to the London Office please designate the country to which you wish to assist. Projects are organized in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. I look forward to seeing you when I attend your Annual Conferences. You can receive other news of ACWW by becoming a contributing member of ACWW and regularly receive the Country Woman Magazine.wi Grant with his wife Dorit receiving his award from FWIC President Margaret Yetman Grant can be depended on for good ideas, contributing to "roll call", making suggestions for guest speakers and helping with research and wording of resolutions. He is always there at our `Founder 's Day Supper' and at our anniversary celebrations. At the 50th Anniversary he entertained us by playing the piano quietly in the background. Perhaps Grant's greatest gift is his total reliability. He can be counted on to assist any member of the organization, be it in carrying supplies, providing courier service or driving to various functions. We feel Grant to be a deserving candid a t e for the `Erland Lee Award of Appreciation'wi 7
