In 1981 Western Si-ber-ia
produced over half a
billion cubic meters of gas
daily Georg i Sulimenkov

Ali-Uni- on Industrial
Association tells ofSiberia's
gas-produci- ng efforts
By 1985 Western Siberia is to
put out 330-37-0 billion cubic
meters of natural gas annuaily
To attain this goal our
Association will have to drill
one thousand new wells and
build another 1 8 plants for gas
preparation
Western Siberia's rigorous
climate makes gas production
here a problem Gas provinces
are found in the permafrost zone
of the unsettled circumpolar
tundra Here the temperature
often drops below 50°C and
cold winds blow When gas
fields began to be opened up
there were no other routes of
transportation but rivers In the
meantime to open the region up
and organize gas fields millions
of tons of various cargoes had to
be brought here
Now a 1500-kilometerrail-w- ay
has been built from
Tyumen a city on the Trans-Siberia- n
Raiiway to Urengoi
across swamps the taiga and
tundra Ports and births have
emerged on rivers and airfields
have been built for heavy
transport planes delivering ur--

now in operation to provide gas
fields and cities with power
But these are only temporary
problems The road-builde- rs
coming to us from other parts of
the country will soon provide
every gas field with 100 kilo-mete- rs
of concrete roads a year
Part of the 500-kilov- olt power-transmissi- on
line extending
from the Surgut electric
station has been put into
operation Next year the station
will operate at full capacity
thus ruling out small power
plants
Housing and cultural and
general construction here is
very intensive In 1 98 1- -1 985 as
many as 15 million square
meters of housing will be built
along with many day-car- e
centers schools hospitals
cultural facilities everyday
services and shops Econo-mist- s
