CONTINENTAL CÖNFERENCE OF NORTH AMERICAN YOUTH FOR PEACE
DISARMAMENT AND DETENTE - Montreal October 1981
On October 23-2- 5 1981
the continental Meeting of
North American Youth for
Peace Detente and Disarma-men- t
was held in Montreal
Quebec It was a great honour
to go as a delegate representing
the Finnish Organization of Ca-nada
Local No 55 Vancou-ver
It was also my first trip to
Montreal a beautiful city where
I met some very interesting
people from around North
America
The decision to hold this
cönference came mainly from
the very positive response to the
World Forum of Youth and
Students for Peace Detente
and Disarmament held in Hel-sinki
Finland in January 1981
The North American Meeting
was organized and then held in
the University of Quebec Ali
told there were 250 young
people met for the three days
to taik on many subjects We
spoke on the threat of nuclear
arms and the need for ali youth
to band together and fight for
basic human rights ali of
which are not valid in a society
of weapons and mistrust Also
many other topics were discuss- -

It was the first North
American Meeting of youth for
Peace held in Canada on such a
large scale as well as being the
first cönference in Canada to
have the World Federation of
Democratic Youth involved
Also among the international
organizations at the meeting
vvas a delegate from the So-cial- ist
German Working Youth
(SDAJ) from the Federal
Republic of Germany Rainer
Butt extended the solidarity of
West Germany's youth A
representative from the Com-mitte- e
of Youth Organizations
USSR Mr Igor Gagifyan
who came representing 47
youth organizations in the
Soviet Union gave an interest-ing
speech in which the Soviet
Union's plea for peace was
clearly defined Jochan Richter
the WFDY delegate gave an
interesting opening address to
the cönference
Though they are not from
abroad the group of 26 youth
from the United States left a
large impression on the cönfe-rence
At least four of the US
youth gave a speech among
vvhich was an address by Elena
Antonia Mora Secretary of the

tutkimuslaitoksella ei myös-kään
uskota että Suomesta
löytyisi 'mustaa kultaa'
Vuosina 1971-7- 5 tehdyissä
merialueen tutkimuksissa ha-vaittiin
Selkämereltä kerrostu-neita
kivilajeja joiden kerros-paksuus
oli kuitenkin niin pien-tä
että taloudellisista esiinty-mistä
ei voi puhua Kerrospak-suus
lisääntyy Ruotsin alue-vesille
päin mentäessä
Pieniä taskuja voi olla jossa
on muutamia merkkejä hiili-vedystä
mutta taloudellinen

youth from the US are neigh-bou- rs
to Canada they have in
many vvays more problems to
deal with during everyday life
such as their president and his
views to name one But one
young delegate from Brooklyn
Technical High School gave an
address to the cönference about
the need for peace that had so
much realism it showed us how
very essential peace is to our
lives
The participants from North
America that came to the cön-ference
represented many
different groups Nationality
groups trade unions peace
councils various religious
groups and others had repre-sentativ- es
As well as many
political groups that ranged
from the 'ultra-lef- f to the Young
Communist League
Each day ali the delegates
and observers met and discuss-e- d
various themes dealing with
the struggle for peace It vvas
unanimously felt that if ali the
youth and people of the world
strive for a world of peace
vvithout threats of destruction
from war and weapons that
peace vvill come Overall the
mood of the cönference vvas
great The atmosphere seemed
to say that we knew that it vvould
be a struggle but that vve the
youth vvould not give up our
fight for peace detente and dis-armament
and that vvhen the
day comes that the vvorld is
ready for peace that vve the
youth vvould lend a large hand
in reshaping the vvorld

tahto muokata maailmaa vas-taanottavaiseksi
rauhalle
