WHEN A MINE IS
The Trudivska' Coal Mine
is vvithin a 30 minute's drive
from Donetsk—the major city
of the Donbas coal-minin- g area
This is a large mine that pro-duc- es
some 55 thousand tons
of coal daily The coal reserves
here may last another 25 years
At the same time the No 7 Coal
Mine vvhich employed two
thousand men was closed down
a fevv years ago: old seams had
been used up and to develop
new ones had proved unfeas-ilb- e
How about the workers
then? Did they have to start job
hunting?
'Absolutely not' said the
miner Mykhailo Dovzhenko

could choose a coal mine to go
to work to for miners are
wanted everywhere I like
many of my workmates went to
the 'Trudivska' Mine Here
wages are good and a lot of new
machinery is employed which
makes miners' work easier

long time to get to work but

Now lefs refer to the past:
since the early '30s when the
program of industrialization of
the national economy was
launched in the USSR not a
single unemployed has been
registered in this country This
explains why at the request of
the working people the clause
on welfare benefits was not
included in the recent laws on
labor Over the period nobody
has applied for such benefits to
the state bodies The miners of

the construction of
housing and social and cultural
facilities is carried on in the
coal-mini- ng areas at higher
rates than in other areas of the
country)

stay put which may be the case

their houses and orchards
