Firstly there is the 150th
Anniversaryofthefirstprinting
of the Kalevala the epic poem
of the finnish people which was
passed down from fathers and
mothers to sons and daughters
over the past several thousand
years
Secondly there is the 80th
Anniversary of the formation of
the Sammon Takojat (Forgers
of the Sampo) In finnish
mythology the Sampo is the
central talisman that is germane
to the epic poem which is made
up of 50 long runes These early
immigrants draw on the Kale-vala
not only for their name but
also for inspiration in a some-tim- es
hostile environment at the
turn of the century
According to the myth the
Sampo a three spouted mill

The South Saskatchewan
River flows east from the
Rockies turns north from
Moose Jaw towards Saskatoon
and embraces The Coteau in
side the bent elbow of the River
It is a region of rolling hills on
the flat prairie covering about
1000 square miles
From the beginning of the
century to 1921 about 1000
Finns from the USA and the
mother country immigrated to
The Coteau Many of them were
blacklisted Mesabi iron range
miners from Minnesota the rest
were discontented with life in
Finland and sought a more sa-tisfy- ing
living in the new world
Most of them joined to- -
gether to organize a social so- -
ciety that would unite the Finns
in the area and "develop their
spiritual and intellectual abili-tie- s
help raise their artistic
pursuits in singing music
acting gymnastics etc have a
library and teach the English
language" Soon they joined the
Finnish Socialist Organization
of Canada and built two halls in
the East Country in 1911 and
in the West Country by 1913
Ultimately they became very
active members of the Finnish
Organization of Canada
This is the story of these
settlers who developed a
cohesive Finnish community in
their new homeland espoused
socialist political and cultural
ideals and were finally assi--
milated into the greater Cana--
dian community Their story is
in microcosm the story of ali
the Finns who "built Canada"
and who also built the Finnish
Organization into a broadbased
cultural and educational organi-zation
that had a great impact
on the lives and struggles of
Canadian working people
Their history is told by a
Ukrainian-Canadia- n school
principal from Beechy one of
the towns that rim The Coteau

leader Sam Scarlett on his farm
while the police searched the
hills Three coal miners had
been shot and the author

was a Coteau farmerwho
coached wrestling to the East

productions of Finnish dramas

at the height of theatre activity
In the early thirties many Co-teau
Finns went to Soviet Ka-relia
to build a socialist society
where Finnish was the official
language and many returned
disillusioned
