Dear friend:
We need Your help to publish an important book
This book is about the Canadian volunteers who
fought the first battles against fascismi in 1936-3-9 in
Spain and to those Canadian veterans of the Spanish
civil war who later continued that fight against fascismi
in the Second World War
This book is our monument to Canadian anti-fasci- st
heroes—that ragged hungryband short of vveapons—
who helped to stop the elite of the German and Italisn
fascist forces for 3 long years in Spain
The fight against formidable odds lives on in
the menory of the veterans who saw so many of their
comrades die in the struggle and in the heartache that
forty years connot erase of the mothers wives and
relatives of those who fell in battle
The battlefields of Spain have long since yielded to
the plough No memorials have been erected to those
foremost anti-fascis- ts of yesteryear whose achie-vemen- ts
wrote an epic page in Canada's history The
rumble of guns is silent The smell of explosives is but a
memory But the anguish of that struggle lives onin the
minds of the bereaved
This book is the story of men who held that the
pursuit of truth oflove ofjusticepeaceanddemocracy
as dearer than life This is the story of Canadians who
chose to sufferpain and death in the struggle for liberty
rather than to stay alive at any price
This history has been prepared and vvritten by those
few veterans who still remain alive who cannot forget
those who fell in battle so long ago It is our monument
to them and ourselves and to the happy iuture vvithin
reach of ali mankinf as the XXth Century comes to a
close
We ask you to help us leave a message ofpeace and
progress for future generations The work of preparing
andprinting the book is hard and costly Its publication
vvillonly be possible if progressive-minde- d people help
us to do it
As a first step we ask you to make a donation to a
special fund which will be held in trust in a bank account
established for that purpose for the purpose of
publishing the book We are told that the cost ofprinting
the book will run anywhere fron $35000 to $40000
In addition if you can loan us some money we vvould
also place it in the special bank account to be used only
for publishing Hovvever we must say at the outset that
our only means ofrepayment vviilbe from the säle of the
book We have no income Securities or resources of
anyotherkind Each loan vvould be made with that clear
understanding
Each person who gives a donation andor loan to
assist in the publishing of the book vvillreceive a special
gift copy of the book vvhen it is published suitably
inscribed

DESTRUCTION
IT WAS MONDAY APRIL
The quietness of a sunny
afternoon was broken by an
ominous distant drone vvhich
with an ever-increasi-ng volume
approached a small fishing
town As the first planes passed
overhead their Ioad of bombs
came vvhistling down indiscri-minate- ly
bringing death and
destruction on a town that had
no air defences In three terror-ridde- n
hours a force of 43
German bombers systematical-l- y
leveled most of this ancient
capital and spiritual center of
the Basques Is was also one of
the cradles of civilization on the
Iberian Peninsula The echoes
of these exploding bombs re-verbra- ted
in waves of anger
around the world and raised a
trcmendous outcry against this
inhumanity towards a civilian
population
It was the biggest air armada
ever assembled up to that date
and it became the first act of
terror-bombin- g aimed strictly at
the very morale of civilians The
firebombing of Berlin Dresden
Hiroshima and Nagasaki were
still hidden betvveen the pages of
future history that would sooon
enough unfold in The first Republican casual-t- y
figures were given as 3000

OF A TOWN
26th 1937
dead and many thousands
wounded and injured The
Spanish government under
Juan Carlos only admits to
about 500 killed and 2000 -- 2500 wounded and injured
The truth lies somewhere bet-vve- en
This late in time there is
no way to verify any actual
figures
The 43 German bombers
were attached to the Condor
Legion sent over by Hitler to
aid Franco in his revolt From
the actual order for the raid vvas
issued by Col Wolfram von
Richthofen Chief of Staffof the
Condor Legion This fact vvas
revealed by a search of German
military archives in Freiburg
Co Richthofen's own personal
papers indicate no knovvledge of
any troops in tovvn although he
had information there were
some in the general area
The tovvn vvas located in a
broad valley on the banks of Rio
de Plencia in the Province of
Vizcaya about 13 km inland
from the open Bay of Biscay
and about 23 km east and a bit
north of Bilbao The 1936
edition of Diccionario Encic-lopedic- o
Illustrado published
Barcelona lists the town's
peace-tim- e population as
5000 Refugees and vvartime
influx hovvever had svvelled
this to over 7000 It had also
become a garrison tovvn for the
Republican forces and about
3000 men vvere lodged in there
This fact vvas only discovered
vvhen the tovvn vvas occupied by
Franco's forces three days after
the raid The truth hovvever
didn"t do Franco any good No
one vvas in a mood to listen any
more The world-wid- e anger
vvas already in full flame
The raid ordered and orc-hestrat- ed
by Co Richthofen
can only have been a terror raid
pure and simple aimed against
the very heart and spirit of
Basque resistiance There is no
other logical explanation
The Basques are one of the
original inhabitants of the Ibe-rian
Peninsula Even their lan-gua- ge
still surviving today
although on a diminishingscale
is not related to any one of the
Indo-Europe- an languages It is
like Finnish one of the hardest
languages to learn The Bas-ques
resisted the Romans be-fo- re
Anno Domini the Visig-oth- s
the Moors the Franks and
ali the others vvho came in bet-vve- en
or aftervvards - and they
resisted Franco and his rebels
although Franco found some
favour among Basque Carlists
in Navarre
The tovvn Col Richthofen so
Willfully razed vvas the ancient
capital of the Basques Its sym-b- ol
vvas an old oak tree Under
the spreading foliage Grand
Councils met to formulate de-fen- ce
policies and to assure the
continuation of Special Royal
Privileges vvhich lasted from the
middle ages into the 19th
century
In 1366 Count Tello orga-nize- d
the tovvn into a separate
cnclave from the surrounding
area of Luno but in 1 882 they
were reunited again into a single
municipality The church of
Santa Maria la Antigua dates
from 1418 and the Council
House fro 1824
The global anger at the
razing of this tovvn and man's
inhumanity to man vvas sym-boliz- ed
by a huge painting done
that very same year by Bablo
Picasso This canvas became
vvorld famous
It has the same name as the
tovvn
