konttori 674-0- 14 kotiin 673-07- 05 CITY CENTBE HUONE 816 Toisessa kerroksessa SUDBURY Ontario Vaatannotto ESPANOLASSA Kes&ivPakhlo 11 ap _ 9 j„ 869-29- 20 up äsf "unpatriotic" He publicly accused the freeze movement of being mampulated by those vvho want the vveakening of America" Reagan called a Congressional vote in favour of the MX missile "a vote for peace for a safer future and for success in Geneva" The implication seemed to be that the 213 House members and Senators vvho voted against the MX were in favour of vvar an unsafe future and a failure of the negotia-tion- s The Orvvellian implications of such Reaganisms are not missed by Knelman Two of the better sections of the book are those dealing with Star Wars and Canadian complicity in the new Reagan strategy Knelman describes why Star Wars would be completely ineffective in defending against a Soviet first strike but would be required as part of a US first strike Star Wars is thus a logical and predic-tabl- e extension of the Reagan nuclear warfighting doctrine Canada is in danger of becoming an active partici-pan- t in the new Reagan nuclear policies by testing the cruise missile and allowing Star Wars to become inte-grate- d with NORAD Knelman believes that Canada will more and more be seen as a lackey of the US military unless our politicians have the courage to stand up to American pressure Needless to say Knelman isn't holding his breath that the current Prime Minister will protect Canada's political and territorial sovereignty Although this book has many good points Reagan God and the Bomb has some important weaknesses It is a difficult book to read with a very dense text which often seems repeti-tiv- e and poorly organized Also Knel-man fails to address adequately one of the themes in the title of the book -- the apocalyptic religious beliefs that are held by many of Reagan's allies and perhaps Reagan himself Knelman also does not answer the key question of how Reagan remains so popular with the American publie if his nuclear policies are so corrupt Despite these weaknesses Reagan God and the Bomb is worth reading especially by those who are skeptical or unfamiliar with the extent of Reagan's nuclear depravity Knelman provides the documentation and supporting evidence to make his argu-ment convmcing Readers vvill also be grateful that Knelman perceives one positive consequence of Reagan's dangerous nuclear policies While Reagan's nuclearism presents the greatest danger for nuclear war the rapid resurgence of today's peace movement provides the greatest hope for world peace and sanity Knelman ftrmly believes that it is only through the efforts of the revamped peace movement that the suicidal nuclear policies of the Reaganites can be stop-pe- d lofting the world from its current state of crisis Since the roots of the word crisis mean both danger and opportunity it is a fitting term to describe the monumental battle bet-wee- n the two diametrically opposed tendencies struggling for control of the fateof our planetD -- GaryMarchant GARY MARCH&NT is a PhD can-didat- e in Genetics at UBC and is Co-ordinat- or and Vice-Preside- nt of End -- the Arms Race He appears for the ' 1 first time in Outlook ( " __ "J LOUGHEED HAUTAUSTOIMISTO Hautaukset 100 mailin sateella Sudburysta toimitetaan ilman lisämaksua PUHELIN 673-959- !
