SAFETY— THE KEY ISSUE
Radioactive waste must not
necessarily be removed
© Energy and ecology — how
do they relate?
Today there ds almost no doubt that
the construction of nuclear povver sta-tio- ns
is advantageous For many
countries such povver stations are
vitally impontant lo their production
of energy The Soviet Union has
enormous resources of the traditional
kinds of energy-producin- g raw matc-rial- s
such as oil gas or coal Neverthe-les- s
nuclear pover engineering is
being developed at a ihigh rate in
our country The key problem of
nuclear power engineering is safety
One can make sure it is true while
visiting any Soviot atomic power
sJation
The Chornobyl Nuclear Power Sta-tio- n
is no exception Here in the town
of Prypyat to the north of Kicv
theoretlcal developments in safety
systems are being realized
How has the problem becn solved?
The first thing you see upon arrival
at 'the station is a tvvostorey btiilding
bearing the sign: "Outer radiatiön
monitoring laboratory" Hundreds of
radiatiön monitors are located on
the floors and in ali the rooms of
the station sending information about
the radioactivity of ithe systems
to the monitoring center
Of course radiatiön monitoring i?
npt confined to that In one of the
rooms we vere shown a map of Kiev
Region Two circles stood out on
it: a small one with a radius of 3
kilometers and a large one 35 kilo-metc- rs
The first circle denoted the
boundary of an industrial zone the
sccond one — a sanitary zone Within
these zones 36 radiatiön monitors
are located constantly checking the
air and atmospheric precipitations
This safe atmosphere may be attribu-te- d
to the extremely reliable protection
system At 'the station for instance
there is an emergency system for
cooling the active zone of the reaotor
It vorks on the energy of an auto-nomo- us
diesel power station In ali
there are three such autonomous sys-tems
vhile the US nuclear power
stations have two such systems Even
imagining the most incredible situa-tio- u
should ali Ihree systems fail
