Another Plane
A couple of wee}ss ago we passed on a bit of intiSesting
information regarding the World Youth F ^ v a l viU
be held in Moscow this saxamsx beginning atlhe end of July.
At that time we jnentioned that the Youth Friendship
League was seriously cpnsidering äiartering another airplane
to make it possible for a maxinum munber of young Can-ääians
to participatein the festivaL It seems that early last
month ali the 65 places on the first plane had been booked
and also ali the 50-odd reseryations by boat had beehtaken,
and there wererstiU manyyoung people who widied to go,
but couldnot get the necessary tjpavel^arraogements.
Because of this the Youth Friendship League d^cided to
charter a second plane and naturally is anxious to book as
mäny passages as possible as soon as |Jössible, because
chartering a plane involyes very definite finäncial poramit-
• ments. . " -•. • • . • ' ••. '
It is timely to recall that the 5-week (trip by air c(»ts only
about $550.00. This includes ali travelling expenses, expenses
at the fesUval in Moscow and a touf of Western European
countries following the festival.-
No matter how you look at it the price is not only
reasonable, it is extremely cheap. Regular plane fare alone
would cost more if a person wished to fly to Europe. And
then the costs of hotels and so on wo)]ld niake such a trip
well beyond th^ reach of most young people!
Chartering a plane is themain reas6nwhy the trip can
be made so cheaply and also special arrangements will be
made throughout Europe for accoonnwdatiöns which wall
cost much less thän normally.
It should also be noted that partlcipants will be free to
travel wherever they please.after Ihe festival. For example
young Finnish-Canadians will have a marvelous oppblrtimity
to travel to Finland from Moscow after the festival and' then
join the group in Britain after a twoTWeek stay in Finland.
We have had the opportunity of attending a number of
international youth funetions in Europe and we can certainly
assure our readers that the trip is well worth while. It is an
opportunity that may come only in. a lifetime. * '
We would certainly suggest that ali Finnish-Canadian
young peopie seriously consider their diances of jöining tiiis

much möre optimistie. The.prevep-tion
of cancer i s f u l l y possible. Pre-venting
some klnds of' cancer is
comparatively easy and practical
now.
This is the verdlct of a noted
cancer specialist, Dr. L ; P . Lärio-nov.
He has idealt with this prob-lem
i n an official publication of
the Soviet Ministry of Health.
These facts are now available in
English i n a new book by Char­lotte
and Dyson Carter, through
Northern Neighbours", 1334 Bloor
West, Toronto 4, Ontario.
Here, space compels us to sum-marize.
The highly optimistie Sov­iet
view of cancer is based on these
tiiree fundamentals:
1. Their scientists say cancer
never arises i n normal body tissues;
they insist i t is wrong to picture
cancers starting suddenly, myster-iously.
2. They. claim science already
knows what causes the majority of
a l i cancers.
3. They say it is practical now,
either to avoid' t h e basic causes
of most cancers; or, to remove cau-ses-
of cancer that have acted on us
för some time.
The great majority of pre-can-cerouis
conditions (disorders in
bödy: tissues that may lead to can­cer)
are started by ordinary, every-day;
things. Dr. Larionov: gives a
number of examples. Below, we
greatly condefise a few:,;
.•Mouth, cimcer:, fi^-st ;signs.,are
pr/ycanceijous "Jiesions" such;as,,pa-pillomas
and ulcers. Caused by cons-
.tant,, long^time irritation of tongue
or cheeks, by decayed prdeformed
teeth, badly^ f i t t i n g dentures, chro-nic
infection^, badly healed injuries.
, * S k i n cancer: most ;frequent
cause is prdlonged over-exposure to
strong sunlight, ^with^resultmg ab-normal
pigmentatton. of the skin.
.•Digestive-system cancer:; faulty
eating, epescially prolongeä ?use o f
strong alcohoi, h i g h l y - i r r i t a t i ve
fäöds, very hot and very spicy foods;
and>neglect of chronic-gästritis,
"indigestion", chronic stomach cat-arrh,
etc.
/ i * Reproductive organs cancer: i n -
flammations qf the neck of the
womb often prece«ie uterine can­cer;
. hormone disturbances cause
other cancers i n males and females.
.•Gullet (throat) cancer: this is
5 times more common in northern
regions than in the south, and i s
caused by long-time irritation, and
actual buming, of throat tissues, as
result of drinking scalding hot
fluids such as tea, coffee, soups.
i * L i p cancer: mainly a male di-sease
(at least i n USSR), and is
caused 4>y chronic sores on the lips,
resultlng from excessive exposure
to severe weather (without proper
l i p care), and by habitual use' of
the lips to hold cigarettes, pipes,
nails, and other highly irritating
objects;
• L u n g (bronchlal) cancer: cau­sed
by prolonged, chronic i r r i t a t i on
of the breathing system, by poUuted
a i r (mainly smoky air) and cigar-ette
smoking, and by repeated in-fectibn
with such diseases as in-fluenza,
with neglect and incom-plete
cures.
Some of Dr. Larionov's facts are
knonrn i n ali countries. F o r exam­ple,
the cause of widespread skin
cancer i n Kashmir . . . where the
natives • carry buming charcoal
around their waists, i n Winter. A n d
mouth cancer i n the Orjent . . .'
where many chew higiily-irritating
narcotic substances. But Soviet re-search
is applied generally. They
c l a im ali cancers have a "pr&can-cerous"
stage, even though, i n some
cases, they ädmit they do not know
what disorder comes ' before the
cancer. '
Dr. Larionov says acancer^iaus-i
n g irritation may act only 1 to 2
years, before cancer begins; that
i s the shortest known time. ,
Usually, pre^cancerous conditions
exist for about 10 years, before car
cer appears; sometimes the irrita^
tion may go on f o r 2Q years or more.

And, whenever a pre<ancerous
i r r i t a t i on is found, i f i t is cleared up
then cancer is positively prevented.
Soviet scientists qlaim they have
verified this, i n tests involning tens
of millions of people. And right
now, on a mass scale, they are fight-ing
cancer thus: .
• E d u c a t i n g the general public to
know, and to avoid, ali possible
kinds of pre-cancerous irritation, es-pecially
those baving everyday
causes. ' , ,'
• G i v i n g thorough cancer- -exam-inations
to vast numbers of men
and women, and promptly treating
a l i who are found to have actual
cancers.
•Most important.— they say —
is their treatment of every person
who is found to have any condition
which might, some day, develop in­to
cancer. -
Dr. Larionov states that Soviet
science now^ knows enough to pre-vent
80% of a l i forms of canceri^

many new mechanical gad-gets
to asslst her and some even

has a small car of her own to case
the burden. (Oh brother!)
Ted Reeve, likewise doesn't
seem to be töo concerned about the
physical fitness of yoUng Cana­dians;
Our boys and girls he says
"are getting blgger a l i the time sö
we better not worry too much
about them . . ." And then he
adds this cholce bit o f reasoning:
"We dö think though that the
automobile has hurt a l i of us in a
point of being up and at it. The
kids don't walk enough or run
enough. They hop into a car if
they have to go more than three
blocks for anything. .
•That has to teli a bit on their
sports and may be one reason we
do BO poorly at Olymbisnisking.
And five-day weck. No a.shes to sift
or haul out. Few farm chores to
do. And no 10 hours a day for six
days slugging it out for the pork
chops." ,
So. there you have it, boys and
girls^' and - the solution is: simple.
No more "soft touches" for the
missus;'-leave that "cushy" job and
start with the pick and 8hovel;.sell
your two cars, increase your hours
per day and your work week, and
youVe on the way to long l i fe health
and happiness. . .

Gripsholmin linnan mukaan, ol­laan
oikeutetusti ylpeitä, sillä
Iqiva on Skandinavian suurin ja sen
laatu on mci-iteknillisesti kuin si­sustuksensa
puolesta Icorkea. Laivaa
luonnehditaan kahsainväliseksi ja
sitä se on jo rakennukseltaan, koska
monet maat ovat joko tarvikkcil
laan tai taiteellisella työllään myö­tävaikuttaneet
sen syntyyn, siinä
mukana suomalaiset taiteilijat.
Koska Ruotsin Amerikan Linjan
laivat ovat myös meille suomalai­sille
yksi ja paljon käytetty keino
päästä -suureen maailmaan, oli O y

järjestänyt matkatoimistot-väelle

Göteborgiin, jonka suures­sa
' satamassa Gripholm valmistau­tui

Lippulaiva Gripsholmin brutto-kantoisuus
on 23,900 tonnia, suurin
pituus 192,32 ja suurin leveys 24,90
metriä. Koneiden hormaaliteho o n '
19.800 hevosvoimaa. Vaikka Grip»-
holm on Kungsbolmin sisarlaiva, .on
sillä kuitenkin "oma, persoohalisuu-tensa".
