Pahoiteltavaa vain on, että N A -
TO-maiden' kylmän sodan p o l i t i i k ­k
a — Itä-Saksan estäminen k i l p a i ­l
u i s t a — j o h t i siihen, että Euroo­pan
johtavat jääkiekkömaat Tshek­k
o s l o v a k i a j a N e u v o s t o l i i t t o eivät
olleet mukana. Jos ne olisivat ol­leet
nyt Coloradossa, o l i s i mesta­ruuden
kohtalo ratkennut toden­näköisesti
vasta viimeisessä otte­lussa.
Näiden kahden maan sekä
Itä-Saksan, Romanian ja Jugosla­v
i a n p u u t t u m i n e n o n k i n vienyt k i ­s
o i l t a MM-ottelujen tunnun.
T o i n e n tiistai^illan ottelu suoritet­t

Päivän pääkilpailun 15 kmn
v o i t t o meni jo kolmannen peräk­käisen
kerran N o r j a a n 27-vuotiaan
inetsätyömies H a r a l d Grönningen-i
n ansiosta. Hän oli melkeimpä
omaa luokkaansa, johtaen lähdöstä
m a a l i i n saakka. Toisen sijan sai
R u o t s i j a vasta kolmantena o l i suo­m
a l a i n e n K a l e v i O i k a r i n e n.
N a i s t e n 10 kilometrillä ei o l l ut

the S K D L whieh had consistently
maintained a policy of friendship
w i t h the Soviet -Union. I n fact the
S K D L iias always had friendship
w i t h the Soviet U n i o n ^s as corner-stone
of its i n t e r n a t i o n a l policy;
A f t e r the i n t i a l f l u r r y of getting
behind Kekkonen other parties
nominated their own candidates or
r a n just the party name 4— specu-l
a t i n g on the p o s s i b i l i t y of getting
b a r g a i n i n g votes in the electoral
college. H o w e v e r J n many regions,
the other parties went into an elec-t
i on c o a l i t i o n w i t h the Agrarians
or a n n o u n c e d t h ^ i r college, vote
w o u l d - g o to Kekkonen.
K e k k o n e n r ö c e i v e d o v e r . 900,000
votes and next came A i t i o with
m o i e than 450,000. This out of
about 2,200,000 — which is over
80% of the total electorate. Kek­konen
and A i t i o were candidates
of the only parties that gained
votes i n the election. The vote for
' K e k k o n e n clearly ejcpressed the
desire of the F i n n i s h people for
f r i e n d s h i p w i t h the USSR. The
g a i n in votes for the S K D L ex-pressing
the same l i n e came from
a steady g r o v v t h i n the influence of
the p a r t y w h i c h was of even great-er
significance considering the
" K e k k o n e n Bandvvagon" feeling
that had been aroused. A s i g n i f i -
cant drop was the vote for the So­c
i a l Democrats although it was re-cognized
that many Social Demo­crats
voted for Kekkonen. This
s w i t c h also applied to the other
parties.
The Kekkonen victory plus the
gam by the S K D L was a dccisive
v i c t o r y for the neutralist and
f r i e n d s h i p line; A l t h o u g h a l i par­ties
c l a i m e d adherence to the Paa­s
i k i v i l i n e , the S K D L and Maalais-,
l i i t t o were the consistent and ac-t
i v e supporters of this policy and
the F i n n i s h electorate confirmed
their. complete support pf. t h i s po­l
i c y . The masses of the people of
F i n l a n d gave definite instructions
to the President — friendship and
co-operation with t h e Soviet U n i o n.
The parliamentary eleclions ^
w h i c h came on F e b r u a i y 4 and 5,
3 weeks after the presidential elec-tions;
were o r i g m a l l y 'scheduled
for J u l y 1962. However, after the
N o v o s i b i r s k meetings, President
Kekkonen, as is his. r i g h t as Pre­sident,
dissolved parliament ''to
provide the F i n n i s h people with
the opporutnity to f u l l y express
t h e i r opinion on the situation
w h i c h developed around the Soviet
note. .
The foreign policy l i n e was na-t
u r a l l y part of the parliamentary
campaign, but many other internal
issues also came to the forc —^-40
hour Week, hospital and medical
carc, cducation reforni, (axcs, e(c.
The M a a l a i s l i i t t o l i n e was — elecl
a parliament to b a c k u p Kokkonen.
The S K D L t consistent. w i t h its pro-gram,
advanced a platform in the
interests of the workers; T h e plat­f
o rm of the S o c i a l . D e m o c r a t i c Lea-gue
(not the party) agreed on
many pointä with the S K D L plat­f
o rm but they refused electoral
co-operation, which can be used to
great advantage in the proportion-a
l e l e c t i o n system which is follövv-ed
i n F i n l a n d . The other parties
a l s o maintaine d the need for social
reforms — but w i t h qualifications,
i.e., " c a n we afford i t " , "we will
p n c e ourselves out of the vvorld
market", etc.
The bourgeois parties (by the
way, m F i n l a n d the bourgeois par­ties
call themselves, in t h e i r lite-r
a t u r e and propaganda, bourgeois
p a r t i e s ) , the Social Democratic
P a r t y and the Social Democratic
League had one common election
t a c t i c — Anti-Cpmmunism, direct-ed
against the SKDI^, This unite'd
front against the S K D L came out
i n every radio and television dis-cussion
and a l i t h e i r election lite-r
a t u r e . To the eyes a n d ears of a
Canadian, quite used to hysterical
anti-Communist propaganda, some
o f it sounded quite w i l d , for ex-ample
"vote S K D L now — and y j ji
might never vote a g a i n ."
The results of the parliamentary

The Agrarians received more
than 530,000 votes and gained sev-eral
seats.. T h i s was expected. The
vote of the S K D L went up — to
almost 500,000; a s u r p r i s i n g gain,
considering the violent anti-com-munist
campaign directed against
it. The loss to the S K D L ' o i 3 seats
was not i s u r p r i s i n g because the
bourgeois parties had u n i t e d ' in
electoral coalitions in~some areas
where the S K D L ' h a d won seats in
1958 by small m a j o r i t i e s.
The s i g n i f i c a n t loss i n the elec;
tions came to the Social Demo­cratic
Party and the Social Demo­cratic
League. In the- 1958 elec­t
i o n s , . the S D P - w o n 48 seats and
the S D L 3 seats. S h o r t l y a f t e r , !!
p a r l i a m e n t a r y members of the
S D P went Ao the S D L making the
l i n e u p 37 and 14. • I n the recent
elections the S D P w o n * 3 8 seats
w i t h a decided drop i n votes and
the S D L won two seats w i t h a gain
in votes. Had the S D L j o i n e d the
S K D L m an e l e c t i o n coalition it
would have won two more seats.
The Kokoomus party slightly
gained i n votes and seats f r om 29
to 31. The Kansanpuolue made a
slight gain in votes and a signi­ficant;
g a i n : in seats f r om 8' to 14.
These gains were the result of
electoral coalitions.

Kansanpuolue and Swedish parties
a l t h o u g h Social Democrats may be
mcluded. I n - a n y event it w i l l be
a bourgeois government. and the
w o i k i n g people of F i n l a n d have a
struggle ahead of them to w i n the
reforms they need. :
I l o w e v e r , the President and the
parliamentary majority are pled-ged
to an i n t e r n a t i o n a l p o l i c y that

K p o s i n g the fallacy of the pre­position,
that when things are good
(which they are in F i n l a n d ) the
workers support" the status .quo'ers,
the s i g n i f i c a n t cm*rent m the inter-^
nai political Ufe of F i n l a n d is to-wards
the Left, (regardless of the
losses suffered by the Social De­mocrats
). Today, the S K D L is the
l e a d i n g p a r t y of the F m n i s h work-i
n g c l a s s . l t made s i g n i f i c a n t gains
in the cities. The S K D L ad»ocates
u n i l e d action by the w o r k i n g class
and is ready to worJc w i t h the S D i*
and the S D L . T h e u l t r a r i g h t w i ng
leadership of the S D I P has scorned
united action, and the leadership
of the S D L has also been vocal
against the unity of the w o r k i ng
class parties. B u t "grass r o o t " mur-murs
for unity in these parties are
beginning and developments i n the
future, with a bourgeois anti-workirig
cla^s government may

From its inception in 1950 the People!s Progressive Party
has mobilized the people with a program- for independenfce
from British colönial rule and socialism. They .were.. elected
in 1953 as the first socialist government of a member of the
British Commönwealth. Deposed after 4 and a half morfths
in power, they wore returned again in' the 1957 elections
under a restncted constitution. Again in 1961, despite an
American Anti-Communist Crusade, they won a majority
vote. /
Janet Jagan spoke without histrionics about the prob-lems
faced by her country in its efforts to v/in independence
and to develop the coimtry itself, particularly by agricultu-ral
improvementSi industrialization and education. ^
' Mrs. Jagan aptlyrelated the hope for an,Independent
British j Guiana to vvorld disarmament. Without imiversal
peace what would independence mean?
