peasants were driven off the land by
the landowners, who were mainly
foreign arlstocrats. They had to
find land. or Jobs with wages. or
starve! ..
And SO. in 1891, almost a quarter
oi a century after Confederation.
when Northern Ontario and Quebec
were barren wasteland, when the
fertile prauries mere grazing land
for buffalo, when the lumber and
mineral . wealth vere crying to be
tapped, when the first trans-conti-nental
railway Tvas only four years
Old; Ukrainian immigrants, in large
numbers, began coming to Canada.
Along with the other Slavic and
Central immigrants. they helped sup-ply
the «pioneer productive labor pow-er
Tvhioh wrought from the vllderness
the Canada we know.
They took up homesteads In Alber-ta,
Saskatchewan and Manltoba. and
with their back-breaking work, made
the Tvest the breadbasket of Canada.
They cleared the forests, worked the
mines. built the plants, the rallways
and the hlghways. The West opened,
factories Tvere built, new towns and |
cities grew up, and Ukrainian Cana-dians
can proudly say they helped
lay the foundations. * •
V Through their own efforts, the
poor immigrants set up schools. cholrs,
orchestras, folk-dancing groups and
cultural centres.. From coast to coast
in almost every communlty they. left
their mark on every phase of Cana­dian
life. In. the labor and farmer
movements, in the professlons, in
sports, drama, music and the arts,
Ukrainlans are prominent.
More than two-thirds of the 500,-
000 Ukrainian Canadians are Cana-dian-
born. They have not forgotten
their heritage, but have adapted it
to their new life, to the benefit of
Canada which has been nurtured by
her various -national feroups -with their
traditions and folk-lore acquired
throughout the years.
The 60th Anniversary wlll be cele-brated
by hundreds of gatherlngs and

Mutta sitkeys, arvokkuus Ja taistelu
ovat rikkoneet monet esteet. Yhdessä
kalkkien muiden canadalaisten kans­sa
ovat ukrainalaiset tänään tasaver­taisina
toisten rinnalla Ja heidän
osallisuutensa Canadan rakentamises­sa
tunnustetaan Ja sitä kunnioitetaan.
Kuudenkymmenen vuoden kuluessa

older foUcs concemlng the younger
generatlon and their ability or, rather.
their inability to speak^the Finnish
language correctly. But i n the last
few months the complaints seem to
have increased to such an extent
that. something should be said about
thls matter bcfore these well-meaning
olstcrs-drlve the youth away from the
Halls to Bome other activities where
they wiH not be critlcized to the
samedegree. When I lived i n North­ern
Ontario. I heard so much about
the fluent language spoken by the
youngsters i n Southern Ontario, and
now that I am In Southern Ontario.
I hear the very same story bclng
told about the fluent young-sters in
Northern Ontario. From my own
experlence about the younger gener­atlon,
ali of them speak Just about
as well, or as poorly (wlth a very
fow: exceptlons). As far as tliLs
argument is concerned, I agrco that
the oldslers have an argument, But
as soon as thls is agrccd to, the
oldstcrs immedlutely Jump to the
conclusion that the reason that the
youngsters speok Finnish so poorly,
or not at all, is tliat they are
ashamcd of the Finnish language
and of their Finnish culture and
ancestry. As far as tliey are concern­ed,
thls is the obvlous answer. Hav-

These older people must rcmember
