For many months we have been receiving the full treat-ment
of crocodile tears by the U. S. State DepartmenT over
the "plight" pf the Cuban 'people during this revolutionary
period in; their history, and a barrage of vilification; against
this brave country, as it struggles to stand on its'own feet.
This\propaganda campaign by U. S. officialdom is not meet-ingwilh
very muchsuccess, and therefore,theyarenow
ing to force the Cuban -people into Submission by open
economic aggression. (We wonder where all this-concern
over Cuba was during Batista's reign of terror.)
It was, therefore, very interesting, encouraging, and per-hapstosome,
surprising .when Mexican gove
declared that Mexico would have to side with Cubä" in her
struggle wilh the United States.
This declaration did not simply reflect Lätin American
'unity.against''English" America. .No, nothingso idealistic.;;
The rcal reason for this Mexican sympathy for Cuba is that
theyihad a similar tussle with the United States a ^little more
than lwenty years ago. The issue at that time was "who
owns Mexican oil — the Mexican people or U. S. interests,"
The real issue in the Cuba-U.S. struggle is basically the same,
except instead of oil, there is, nickel (Inco) and sugar.
Whal does this mean to Canada? Lets face it, Canada
is dominatedeconomically (and. therefore. politicalIy,cultur-älly.)
by USiOinterests. -Very likely they will take a different
form, but they~will be with us some day. We cannot pro-

The Mexican people won their battle with U.S. oil in­terests
in" the 30's. They built' a beautiful monument in
Mexico City to commemorate this victory. We think that

these days on a similar project.

ahead of them. They must organize
the Club's activities i n a way that

the same time satisfy everyone

in the Club's best interest. They
must organize an educational pro-gram
for the members in -proper
use of: equipment, wood-lore: and i;
conservation practices, without
seeming to^ insert' a "message" in

when NO budget is available.
