menetti otteensa parilla viime kier­roksella
ja tulokseksi merkittiin

Toisessa parissa hollantilainen
Pesman luisteli j ö tosi hienon tu­loksen
8.12,1. Sitten oli vuorossa
Järvinen. Suomalaiset odottivat
kovaa alkuvauhtia, johon Järvinen
on aina pystynyt, mutta nyt hän
näytti aiyan toista. Tavoitteena oli
8.20 lopputulos ja sen mukaisesti
alkukierrokset sujuivat 40 sekuntin
nopeudella. Mutta neljän kierrok­sen
jälkeen hän lisäsi vauhtia ja
Pesmanin ajan arveltiin jo olevan
vaarassa. Viimeinen kierros vei
kuitenkin sekuntin liikaa, joten
ajaksi, merkittiin 8.13,6. Tulos nos
ti Juhanin jälleen voittajaehdok­kaaksi.

maailmanmestaruuteen oli
mennyt.
Yhdeksännessä parissa luisteli
Johannesen, parinaan Kiinan pit
' kien inatkojen spesialisti Tang
Tshutsheng. Johannesille kävi mel­kein
samoin kum Seierstenille, hän
aloitti lujaa ja oli 3,000 metrin koh­dalla
5 sekuntia Pesmania edellä.
Johannesenin loppuaika o l i kuiten­k
i n niin hyvä kuin 8.12,2, joten
hän hävisi vain 0,1 Pesmanille. Sit­ten
ei enää tapahtunutkaan mitään
erikoista.

osa valmistetaan yhtiön tehtaal­la

tehtaalle.
Tämä ratkaisee, että tehdas tulee
olemaan käynnissä ainakin tulevan
vuoden ajan, joka voidaan laskea
kokonaan sen voimakkaan painos
tusliikkeen ansioksi, jolla lähetys­töt
korostivat asiaa Ottavvassa ja
Torontossa käynneillään;
Aivan kuin tuosta saavutukses­t
a innostuneena Fort Williamin
edustaja liittoparlamentissa esitti,
että yleiset talvityöt jotka kaupun­gin
esityksistä aikaisemmin lohkais­tiin
pois, otettaisiin nyt huomioon
Edustaja Badanai esitti, että ensim­mäisenä
tulisi heti alkaa työt maan­tien
valmistamiseen kaupunkien s i ­vusta
läpikulkevan; liikkeen varal­ta.
Teknillisen koulun rakentami­selle
ovat piirustukset valmiina. Va­roja
tulisi myöntää alhaisella viiok-rattavien
asuntotalojen rakentaiiii-seen
jne. —

During the past few weeks in many of the bigger centres
the Finnish people have been talking of arranging "Kalevala
juhlas". We all know that "juhla" tneans a festival or ccr
lebration of some kind and therefoir we-afe ali for it and we
are really not too interested in what "Kalevala" means; May-be
it just happens to be some Finnish heroes name!
Weil, it isn't exactly a heroes name, but it is the name
of a very famous national epic of the Finnish people which
is recognized as such throughout the world. Not only that,
the lore of the Kalevala has been translated into many
languages, including English, and is recognize<i to be com-parable
and equally important to the works of Homer known
äs the Ilias and Odyssea, to the Icelandic Edda and to the
German Nibeltmg.
When that simple f act is reeognized then our interest
in the Kalevala increases and we would suggest that you
get a copy of it in English and browse through it. We were
going to suggest getting a copy in Finnish, but the old
fashioned folk lore is pretty lough for the younger gene-ration
who do not have a fuU command of the Finnish langu-age.
But it is very interesting even in English and autho^
rities claim the translation is quite-good. As a matter of f act,
when you start reading it you will suddenly get the feeling
that you have read something in that form before. And howr
right you are, because Longfellovv used the same unusual
style in "Hiavvatha".
We already mentioned that the Kalevala can be com-
•pared with'a number of other important documents, but
there are »a number of important differences. It should be
remembered that the social development of the Finnish
people was considerably slovver than in many other parts
of Eui'ope and for that reason the Kalevala speaks of a period
whcn the Finns had not even advanced to feudalism and
lived under extremely prlmitive conditions.lt is generally
thought that the Iines and the poems of the Kalevala date
back to about 1,000 A. D., but that Is a debatable point. It is
also interesting to note that Ihey do not glorify war and
that in ali cases the forces of good alvvays win over the
forces of bad.
It should also be emphasized that the topic is not neces-sanly
real, but deals with the thinking of the people of that
period. They were interested in knowing how the world was
created and hovv things developed on earth and they ex-pressed
their thoughts in verses that have carried on from
generation to generation and still live in especrially the more
backvvard areas of Finland and Soviet Karelia, which is
generally recognized as the main area from which the poems
vvere collected.
Gollecting the verses and Iines of the Kalevala must
have been quite a job. It \vas first undertaken in the early
years of the 19th century by Dr. Elias Lönnrot. He v^ould
wander from farm to farm and vvrite down all the Iines and
verses that the people remembered and in, a few years, by
1835, he had collected 12,078 verses, which he proceeded to
print in the Old Kalevala. He continued his vvork and in
1849 printed a new edition which embraced 22,795 verses.
This edition is actually still considered as the main Kalevala,
although many other people since Lönnrot have devoted their
lives to studying the Kalevala and have even added a few
new verses,
It must have been a real Job for Lönnrot and he actually
devoted his life to the task and we must coneede he did an
excellent job.
Unfortunately, we have been unable to devote very much
time to studying the folk lore and becoming familiar with
the contents, but we do have some idea of the three main
characters whöm the poems circle around. They are Väinä­möinen,
Ilmarinen and Lemminkäinen. Also a very important
gadget is the Sampo. which is a machine capable of producingL
practically anything and was capturedby the. bad people
of Pohjola.
A l f i n all it. is written in a very exciting way and once
you get started on it, it is pretty hard to stop. We would
certainly suggest that all our readers get a copy of the book.
The Kalevala has created such a great interest that only
recently the Finnish governm.ent owncd film agency made:
a Special agreemont with the Soviet Union to produce a film
on the topic. Work has been going on for some time and we
heard recently that the film will be released soon. The name
of the film is "Sampo", the source of all good and wealth
and that is what we are all striving for, so it is very befitting.
That is certainly one film we won't miss.

Prices range from $2.00 to $3.50
per day, including food and accom-modation,
and trips cover periods
of from 7 to 14 days. Post Festival
travel to the Soviet Union is also

For the Festival itself, the com­mittee
announces that it is daily
receiving requests for Information
from all parts of the country. A
group of 10 young French-Canadian
dancers are preparing themselves
for the Festival and pian to initiate
a series of concerts as well as i n -
dividual collections to help finance
their trip to the Festival. Another
letter from Montreal states that " I
have already lined up 5 people for
the Festival and expect to be able
to get 10 more". Requests for in
formation have come from as f a r
afield as Rycroft, Alberta, and
many other small communities
thoughout Canada. Local Festival
committees in a l l major centres r e -
port that preparations are begin-ning
to get well underway.
To further popularize the Festi­val,
the Canadian Festival Arrange­ments
Committee has prepared a
special brochure i o r distribution on
the widest possible basis. It out-

on various other aspects of Festi­val
participation. The brochure,
together with the Festival registra-tion
