Our long vacation was x o m i n g to
an end. It was t i m e to say fare-w
e l l to o u r r e l a t i v e s , and to the
l a n d of " t h o u s a n d s of l a k e s . " We
had made arrangements to sali
home Via Denmark, and booked
passage on the " A d r i a n , " a fair-sized
boat ^ h i c h w o u l d take us to
Copenhagen i n ' t w o d a y s and n i g h t s.
VVe left f r om the s o u t h harbor in
H e l s i n k i , on^September 6th i n t he
afternoon. We had comfoctable
roöms, good Service, a n d t h e i ' \ v ea

Ray Larson, who \vas i n t h e car
w i t h them was n i o r e fortunate. H e
escaped death \vith minor bruises
a n d Shock. J e r r y B o l k y \vas 19 a nd
l i v e d right across the r o a d from
us. He \vas i n t h e n a v y and at the
t i m e of the accident was on leave.
On January 23 l u n e r a l serviccs

The Weather is v e r y damp a nd
m i l d . We have frequent rains a n d
one night \ve had a b i g r a i n s t o rm
\vhich melted avvay a f ew i n c h e s of
snow that had f a l l e n previously.
A s y o u can guess, the next morn-i
n g there; was water a l l o v e r the
place. In our u s u a l l y small stream
t h e r e was e n o u g h water to svnm.

of these extra assignments was a

was a three minute speech f o r Engr

Today mom r e c e i v e d a letter
f r om Mrs. H e l m i Saari who l i v es
i n Soviet K a r e l i a , or in Russia.
H e l m i Saari used to l i v e i n Webs-t
e r ' s Corners and was a good f r i e nd
of moin's. She went to R u s s i a w i th
her late hysband i n the early
1930's. H e l m i has a m a r r i e d daugh-ter
and granddaughter now. I

A l t h o u g h I wash't there. to see it,

On the other hand i l must bo notcd that the Alerts Athletic
Club is far f r cm dead and can c e r l a i n l y rally at any time to
worthwhile task.s thai facc the club. But wc are under the
impression that there are many other activities that the club
could undertakc thai \vould be of considerable interest to the
prcscnt mcmbcr.ship and to dozcns of others \vho at one time
or another have belpn^cd to the club and a real .serious effort
should bc made to l i v en lhin{:^s up a bit.
It is truc that aj^ain this vvinter the womcn's gym classes
and the children's .tjym classes have been conlinuing although
the turnout has not been the bcst. A n d we have every i n ­tention
of kecping up work in this. field and in Irack and field
so that;we w i l l have a good t.eam at the B i g Festival in To­ronto,
but more attcntion should bc given olhcr activities.

this problem at timcs and have found solutions to their
problems.
The Alerts had its annual mecting rcccntly and we must
concede that it was one of the bcst we have had for quite
some tirne. Everyone prcscnt had something to say and öb-viously
some nGw ideas are germinating. Thai i.s exactly
what is needed, bccausc \ve hiivc excellent facilities at our
disposal and full use should be made of them.
The immediate project right now is the annual cabaret
dance, which Iho club halds every year in January or Feb-ruary.
This year \vc are holding it On February 7 and it looks
l i k e i t is going to be a real .succcss and a good crowd w i ll
turn ouL A f t e r that we must l u r n our serious attention to
skiing, beeau-se the follovi^ing wcekend Jehu is sponsoring
the cross-country ski championships of t h e Sports Federation,
and twoweeks later t h c c l u b u s sponsoring its own'meet at
Beaver Lako. We are confident that wo can get enough
forces on the movo to succcssfully organizc thcse activities.

b u i l d a new hali in the place of the one that mysteriously
burned last year: We do not k n ow the finai plans yet, but
