ovat saaneet nauttia nämä
pohjoisen asukkaat ja erityisesti ne
lukuisat henkilöt jotka viettävät
vapaa-aikaansa, niiden suurten "jä­nisten"
perässä samoillen pohjoi­sen
risukolta.
Ensi sunnuntaina pidetään Etelä­pään
osaston kokous ja että iltauni­setkin
voisivat siihen osallistua^ pi
dämme kokouksen kello 3 iltapäi­vällä.
Kokouksen jälkeen rupatte­lemme
ja nautimme haalin Jussin
keittämät iltapäiväkahvit. Siis ter­vetuloa
päättämään näistä yhteisis­tä
asioista.
Siinä sekakuorohommassa ei ole
päästy paljon eteenpäin vaikka sitS
on 'punnittu'' ja järkeilty monelta
puolen. Ensiksi entinen kuoron
johtaja ei ottanut tehtävää vastaan
tällä kertaa ja tämähän se onkin
kaikkein , suurin kysymys. Pitäisi
olla johtaja, jonka ympärille voi­taisiin
koota 'joukkoja, samoin tä­män
johtajan pitäisi olla sellainen,
että joukot tulisivat hänen ympä
Tiileen.
Tässä pari viikkoa sitten lupautui
Timminsin kaupungin valtuuston
eräs jäsen, Jean Larsei, joka on
tiettävästi musiikki-ihmisiä, että
hän tulee johtamaan kulta-alueen
sekakuoroa. Mutta myöhemmin hän
ilmoitti, että juuri tässä kuussa hä
neliä ei olisi aikaa tälle hommalle,
koska kaupungin eri komiteat an­tavat
niin paljon lisätehtäviä; Näin
ollen kulta-alueen sekakuoron toi­minta
ei ole päässyt alkuun tänä
syksynä. En tiedä miten käy sitten
myöhemmin, mutta se on mielestäni
suuri vahinko jos ei saada kuoroa
toimimaan, joka niin ansiokkaasti
on aina edustanut aluettamme kan
salaisten suurjuhlissa. — H.

the romance of "beyond the hori-zon"
and in rapid success|on work-ed
and soaked in experience of life
as a sailor, clerk, gold prospector
in Honduras, assistant manager of
his father's touring company, se;i-man,
Buenos Aires dock loafer.
Bowery "bum", actor in his fath-er's
troupe, reporter for a-Nevi
England paper. "These colourful
years of wandering crammed his
mind with scenes of a'raw, discon-tended,
lonelyhumanity, scenes of
strange ugliness and passion at sea
or ashore. They did much to nour-ish
a sombre imagination and phil-osophy."
The "colourful years" also
cost expensively. in heaith and m
the spring of 1913, 0'Neill found
himself convalescing from tubercu-losis.
It was then that he decided
to become a play Wright and thus

In the search for expression, a
philosophy., the forming of a style.
the answer of life, he avidly read
the Greek and English dramatists,
as well as Ibsen and above ali, the
instrospective, subjective Strind­berg.

through the activatingi inner
subjective "behind-life", turned
from realism, which in his opinion
is shalIow and inadequate for it
offers nothing but "the banality of
surfaces", and folIowed Strindberg
in use of expressionistic methods,
the casting aside of ali represen-tation
of outer reality in order to
give expression solely to inner sig-niflcance.
The premise of some of CNeiirs
plays, as spoken by the characters,
will give us an insight into how
0'Neiirs philosophy pervaded his
plays. In the biographical 'Long
Day's Journey into Night," Mary
Tyrone (0'Neiirs mother) says:
"None of us can help the things
life has done to us. They're done
before you realize it, and once
they're done, they make you do
other things until at- last everv:.
thing comes between you and what
you'd like to be, and you've lost
.vour true self forever." In "Anna
Christie," Anna concludes "There
ain't nothing to forgive anyway. it
ain't your fault and it ain't mine,
and it ain't his neither. We're ali
poor nuts, and things happen and
we just get mixed in wrong, thafs
ali." Christine in "Mourning Be-comes
Electra" declares, "God
won't leave us alone. He twists and
wrings and tortures our lives with
others' lives until we poison each
other to death."
Here is the crux of the tragedy of
0'Neill his gloomy determinisin
•— inherited fate — and the hand-cuffing
of active participation of
his characters in life.
The subjective in man cannot be
separated from the objective world.
Since man is born into society, a
going concern with evolved patt-crris
of morals, ideas, politics, reli-gion—
he is formed. molded, and
influenced by it.
0'Neiirs philosophy led him ;>
difficult path in his attempt to
create but nonetheless left behind
not only many worthwhile pla.vs
but an invaluable wealth of idea,
of theatrical Inventiveness, artistic
craftmanship from which much can
be learned. His search for a cre-ative
life led him to explore new
dramatic potentialities. He utilized
speech and pantomime, music and
choral effects. and stage design in
exciting ways. His earlier plays,
even though his pessimistic phil­osophy
had already been sown, are
marked by a search for realism
and an exploration of social Lssues
which exerted a lasting influence
on the modern theatre.
0'NeiIl struggled through life
and writing. trying to find a. phil­osophy
which was the answer. In
the end, as one critic has written,
0'Neill's . ; world of outer action
becomes a structure of cardboard
and canvas, the. world of the inner
life, a desert of nothing, where
even the vision of death as an
oasis is a mirage."
Eugene '0'Neiirs genius has
borne bitter fruit but it has also
borne undeniable testimony to the
Creative humap strength that his
pessimism denied.
Tennessee Williams has carried
on, probably with more finesse, the
0'NeiIl tradition.

the U.S. could recover from an ali-out nuclear war within ten years or
less. Therefore although losses mIght be in the tens of inillions of lives,
nuclear was was thought feasible in order to attain a polltical objective.
Ofconrse the above are only justlflcatlon aftcr the fact. The policy
of the U.S. govemment had continuously been to develop nuclear wea-pohs
and theIr carriers from the advent of the bomb. The attempt to
keep huclear weapons in American hands only, obvlously to be used' as
a big stlck to obtain concesslons, was in fact the essence of the U.S.
Banich proposals of 1948 whlch naturally the U.S.S.R. rejected.
In the U.S., the cold war has been used to produce a "warfare state"
Ih whlch the armed forces, hia business, and the political administratlon
have takeri over the leadership. The advent and development of the
Socialist sector of the world and the newly awaken1ng Afro-Asian na-
-tions, with theIr plans for development, have speeded up the taherent
contradictlons In capitalism Itself. The pomp prhnlng of thie national
e€onomy by defence orders, the protection of U.S. capital invested in.
and the tribute stolen from, underdeveloped conntries by support of
army dkrtatorshlps are reflectlons of world capltallsm*8 attempt to keep
the status quo In power and to exert theIr tafluence over the whole

'The sö-called "misslle-gap", which has been found to be non-exlstent,
was used by Kennedy to prove that he wonld do better job of
arming the U.S. In fact, Kennedy'» administratlon Inherited, accordlng
to U.S. Intelllgence, a large lead over the U.S.S.E. ta nuclear delivery
vehicles when it took over the government from Eisenhower.
Kennedy has kept his promlse to Increase the armaments of the
U.S. A year ago, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defence Gllpatric crowed that

tens of thousands; and of course we have more than one warhead for
each vehlcle." Secretary .of Defence McNamara added: "Our taterconti-nental
bombers number 1,700 . . . We can count 80 polaris missiles . . .
several dozen operational Intercontinental ballistic missiles in the U.S.
. . . (6 aircraft carriers with the eapability of) SO attaek aircraft . . .
armed with megaton nuclear weapons." In Enrope there are hundreds
of B-47 bombers, 150 British V-bombers, and thousands of fighter bom­bers
ali capable of carrying small nuclear weapons. There are more
than 100 intermediate range missiles ta Turkey, Italy and Britain.
By the end of thIs year, as reported in the Wall Street Journal, the
U.S. wlll have operational 126 Atlases, 72 Titans, 20 solid-fnel Mtaute-men
and nine nuclear subs moUntIng 144 Polaris missiles. In. 1963, 540
I.C.B.M.^ wlll be H place In addition to 14 more Polaris submarines carry­ing
224 more missiles. Bv 1965. Gllpatric has stated the U.S. arsenal will
taclude 800 bomber carried missiles, 1,500 I.C3.M.'s. ''Wewill have more
than donble the number of alert weapons' that we have today by the end
of 1965 . . . we wlll have twlce the striking power by 1965 thai we have
at the end of the fiscal year (June 30) 1962.'?

atomic blackmail calls for a U.S. capabUity to: (a) destroy the Soviet
Union In a fIrst attack; (b) destroy the Soviet Union in a second or
retaliatory attack. if the Soviet Union strikes first; (c) retain a stra-teglc

The statesmen of the other Western comitries, Including Canädb,
have approved of Kenne.dy's uull_ateral nuclear brinkmanship. Therefore
we cannot depend on them to give leadership in the darkest days of
our World. The people of ali countries themselves must be mobi-lized
to force a sane policy on the leaders of the U^S.' We must stop
