vä^äq sivistyneet siitä mitä esi-isämmev
olivat satoja vuosia taka­perin,
jopa' eräissä suhteissa olem­me

Lähtölaukauksen pamahdettua
syöksyi Tabori johtoon j a ensim­mäinen

Kolmannen kierroksen lopul­la
meni Kidd tuulta halkaisemaan
ja hänen johdollaan saatiin en­simmäisen
mailin ajaksi 4.28.
Tässä vaiheessa yritti Tabori "jät­tää
kilpakavenrinsa siinä kUiten
kin onnistumatta.
Noin 200 metriä maalista aloit­ti
Kidd loppukirin j a Taborin oli
läätävä. Kiddin voittoaika 8.50,8
on parempi <;anadan virallista en­nätystä,
mutta huonompi hänen
aikaisemmin jupksemaansa aikaa
8.48,4, joka odottaa virallista hy
väksymistä. Taborin aika oli 8.-
52.0.

Within a very few short days the Finnish Cafiadians from*
ali across Canada will be cöngregating in Sudbury to partici-pate
in the Fifth Annual suurjuhla. .
The choirs, athletes, actors, ele are going through their
final tune-up and the organizingicommittees are ironing out
the last-minute details of their contribution to the Canadian
cultural heritage.
Many choralconcerts and track and field meets have
been held as warm-up and dress rehearsals for this festival.
Glancing through the festival week-end programme, we were
impressed with the Wide variety of its content. This is tjie
work of many heads and hands, bound together with a unity
of purpose. We are proud and humble to be able to belong .
to such organizations and v/e confidently predict that this
will be the greatest ever of the festivals we have held.
The Founding Convention of the New Party takes place
in Ottawa on July 31-^Aug 2. This marks a historic step for-ward
in the political development of the people of Canada
and is the first major political change in Canada since the
founding of the CCF in the depression era.
\ The founding convention is taking place in a critical
period of Canadian history. The country is faced with record
unemploymentj with the imminent threat of complete foreign
economic and political domination and the big question of
whether we are going to join the "nuclear weapons club" or
become a bulwark forpeace.
These are some of the major challenges that await the
birth pains of the New Party.
It will be most iuteresting to see how realistically the
New Party will rise to meet these chanllenges. In our estima-tion
the fortunes of the New JPartywill rise or fall largely
in accordance to the policies they adopttowards these impor-tant
questions.
If they ca^n come up with, militant, logical and clear-cut
reform policies towards the solution of these grave problems
it is a certainty they will gain a tremendously large mass
following.
Space and Want
Astronomy can not but benefit
from placing telescopes on orbit-i
n g space station or .the moon.
The earthbound Instruments are
limited to the visible rays and
certain radio waves of the sun or
o her Stars because the earth's at-mosphere
blot out other electro^
magnetic waves. Telescopes outside
the atmosphere i v i l l give a far bet-ter
understanding of these hea-venly
bodies and also interstellar
Space. The history and evolution
of the earth, the solar system,
our galaxy and the universe itself
w i l l be far better understood with
Information received from orbit-ing
telescopes. The U;S. has sue-cessfully
orbited a gamma ray te-lescope
o n , A p r i l 27th of this
year. The Soviet Union, with its
capability of launching heavy ve-hicles,
must be contemplating a
large astronomic observatory to,
orbit the earth or one which will
be set up on the moon. During
the recent eclipse of the sun on
February 15th of this year, Soviet
astronomers sent up a series of
observation rockets to picture the
eclipse from outside the earth's
atmospheric interference. This un-doubtedly
will be of great Scien­tific
meaning since the outer ed^
ges of the sun are best studied du­ring

Both space powers have indica-ted
their intent to explore the
moon although some probes
cessful in six attemps to study the
moon alhtugh some of these probes
have given much data on the ra-diation
belts around the earth and
Pioneer IV is orbiting the sun.

be able to land back on earth. Be-tween
1968 and 1971, the Ameri­cans
expect to have solved the
problems of landing men on the
moon and returning them to earth.
This program will probably be
speeded up in an attemptvto score
a first over the Soviet: Union.
The Soviets are, as of now,
ahead of the U S . i n this race to
the moon. This has been one of
their aims in space exploration
and each of their satellites and
probes have added to t h e . know-ledge
necessary to attain such a
goal. Dr. Charles: Draper of Mas-sachusietts
institute oi Technolo­gy,
believes the scientists of the
Soviet Union are capable today
of landing a man on the • moon,
judging from the rockets they a l -
ready possess, the Communica­tions
and guidance systems their
other probes and satellites have
exhibited. The Soviet program on
lunar exploration apparently has
been.to: first hit the moon which
they did on September 12, 1959
with Lunik I L then to photograph
the backside of the moon which
Lunik III d id on October 7, 1959,
after blasting off on October 4th.
The third stage, landing "baby
tank laboratories" on the moon ap-pears
feasible any time the Rus-sians
wish it and it can be expec-ted
any day. The fourth stage,
placing a man on the moon with
the capability to return w i l l follow
stage three of the program.
Nigel Calder, i n the A p r i l 20
issue of New Scientist believes
that ^ e Soviets aim tö put a man
on the moon during "the year of
the Quiet Sun" 1964—5 which has
been set aside by the international
Geophysical Comihittee for the
study: of the sun when it is rela-tively
inactive as far as solar
flares would be less. Calder be­lieves
the Soviet Union will then
set up a manned observatory to
the moon. for lunar and astrono^-
cal research.
Some scientists question the
feasibility of sending a man to the
moon or the usefulness of such
a pian. Dr. Hans Thirring believes
" Y o u will not find anything sen-sational
on the moon. Very little
i n comparison' to what it would
cost. So why spend billions for
that?" He also believes that,
". . . within the next ten years a
manned expedition to the moon
w i l l not occur." The great weight'
caysed by the necessity to trans­port
men, shielding, food, water,
air, insruments, air.-conditioning to
insure safety anci return would - be
50 to 100 times greater than the
package the Soviets put on the
moon i n 1959. This is why Thirring
doubts whether the feat will be
accomplished even within 30 or
40 years. Krushschev has hinted
that the Soviet Union w i l l be able
to loft a 50 ton payload and i f
this is true, the objection raised is
no problem at a l i .
Other scientists, iricluding Dr.
James Van A l l e n , of Van Allen's
Radiation Belt fame, believes lan­ding
men on the moon is techni-cally
feasible. Van A l l e n has inrged

Astronautics^ also believes in the,

representatives of ali ethnic
groiips are talking about it and
because I noticed early i n the
spring that there was a l o t o f work
being done i n T70. on the forma-tion
of a committee for the co<
ordination of activity amongst the
various groups, I; feltj that perhaps
fuel could be added to the fire
by reportng about two such com-mittees
that the F i n n i s h Canadians
out here in the west belong to.
First of a l i , beginning with the
group which is nearest us i n the
ethnic sense, we should note that
the Finnish Organization and t h e
SISU Youth Club i n recent years
are both active members i n ' t he
Scandinavian Central Committee
which brings together 15 organiza­tions
from Danish, Swedish, Ice-landic,
Norwegian, Finnish and
Swedish-Finnish communities. The
Central Committee concentrates
on two or three big affairs, a year
namely the Mid-Winter Festival in
January, the Midsummer Festival
in June and more recently the
Scandinavian Cross Country Ski
Meet early i n the spring. The
crowds drawn by these af f airs are
fabulous. The Winter Festival a-verages
around 1,200 people and
the Summer Festival around 3,000
each year. The ski meet which has
onlybeen i n operation for two sea-sons
has managed to bring out 40
to 5p skiers each meet which is
not bad for this neck-of-th-woods
where cross coutry is difficult to
arrange and has never had a lot
of support. It is a shame that
Finnish Ski clubs which do not
belong to the Central Conunittee,
because they supposedly disagree
with the principals of the group
(and I for one doubt that there
is any reason for this attitude and
back up this statement bypointing
out that there is the greatest va­riety
of social and political opin-ions
in the committee) but as I
was saying,-• i t is a shame that
these clubs have not turned out
their members. However as long
as the comittee continues to re-ceive
the support of groups. like
the Sons of Norway and as long
as the meet remains associated
to the Canadian Ski Emblem cam-paign
which is being pioneered out
here in the west, I do not think
that there is much danger of fail
ure in this field.
The second group which should
be mentioned is the Vancouver
Branch of the F o l k Society which
has the support of 35 organizations
which represent the majority of the
ethnic communities in Vancouver.
The Society puts on a f our day
Festival once a year which is a i -
ways in the best "house" to be
found and this of course is now the
Queen Elizabeth Tbeater, said to
be one o f j h e fiiiest i n North Ame^
rica. Since möving to the Queen E .
the publicsupport has become even
better and now the crowds seem to
average around 2,000 on each of
the Festival nights.
Sometimes, in the midst of cne
o f these activity s t o r m s w h i ch
suddenly appears as though out
of nowhere we can hear people
speak about the waste of time and
effort brougt about by belonging
to these "extra" organizations.
Yes it i s true that each committee
does demand its due, but i n the
long run it seems that these groups
do not contradict the activities of
our organization but on the con-trary
they are of great service to
us. For instance, wherev else can
you meet 50 many of the Finnish
immigrant people as at the Scan­dinavian
Festivals . . . I don't meaa
to be coy but i t seems than ihere
are many more of these people
attending the af f airs than there are
are at our own organizations. Mem-bership
i n the committee is only
a waste of time if we do not take
advantage of the contacts that we
are able to make.
As to the piemebership in the
Folk Society . . . well first of. a l i
it does not draw on us too much
because the "action" is concentra-ted
to a few days a year. The final
result of the festival is that it
sharpens the interest of the peo­ple
that are going to perform and:
gives them reason to do their best
The dance group for instance has
,made its best perfornaances at;
1) the Midsummer Festival, . and
2) the 1960 F o l k FestiVal. The
performers know that they will
be representing the Finnish Ca­nadians
and their cultural activi­ties
when they conie out on stage
and SO they u s i i ^ y qutdo them-selves.

In conclusoin . . . the idea of
co-ordination amongst groups like
our own appears to have: (1) good
practical reasons i.e. finances, at-tendance,
forces for arranging big-ger
aff airs and the »opportunity
to promote the pricipals and aims
of the groups involved, and (2) a
good moral base i n the sense that
it brings Canadians of diffe-rent
backgrounds together and
helps us to better understand the
multi-nationality of our people
which, alorig with the realization
that w,ear? i n many ways together
is one of the main considerations
to be taken when planniing our

39.0.0. Näitä, ei olla vielä viraiu-sesti
hyväksytty vaan n.e on sup-ritettu
kaikkien sääntöjen mukai­sesti
joten ne tullaan aikoinaan hy­väksymään
myöskin ' uusiksi ennär
tyksiksi.
Liittotoimikunta huomauttaa
vieläkin, että kaikille liittomme
mestaruuskilpailuihin - osallistuvilla
seurojemme jäsenillä, tulee olla,
säätömääräisessä kunnossa jäsen­kirjansa
mukanaan voidakseen 0-
sallistua sanottuihin kilpailuihin.

Moscow. — There I was, wonder-ing
what to do one fine Saturday
afternoon. I had just enjoyed a
fine afternoon concert of Russian
folk music, songs and dances, plus
some fine classical presentation
and it came to mind the original
pian of visiting the Bolshoi for the
Royal Ballet had fallen through.
I had only to wonder for about
ten minutes when one (eräs) chum
suggested we go to the USA—US­SR
track and field meet at the
Lenin Stadium.
Before 1 could polish my Maple
Leaf tie pin, I wa headed for the
nearest Metro (subway) station
with a whole "porukka' of sports
lovers. We arrived at the Stadium
about 5 bells. The meet started at
