The opening. ceremony was really.

122 countrles taking part. One
could. see' ali? colours and creeds
of people in the worId. We felt
very proud of the Canadian dele-gation.
With everybody dtessed in
similar costumes we really made ^
impressive sight.
There is so much to write about,
that it present3 a real problem.
This time we will try to restrict
ourselves to the interest in sporis
we have seen in'the Soviet Unioni
We are linder the impression that
jports and culturatvork is more ad-vanced^
in thevSpviet Union than
anyotber place ui the World.
Where ever you go you ^can see
sports stadiums, tracks, volley ball,
basket ball, tennis and many other
types of courts. And ali these
places have permaneät instructorff
who help in the training. They also
have a System of handing out me^
dals according to the' acliievements
you accomplish. This does a great
deal <to : arouse interest in sports
and encourages athletes to "Improve
m their achievements. Even in the
back yards you will see gymequip-ment,
high bars, parallel bars and
such.

have over 100 track and field clubs
plus clubs for boxing, wrestling,
rowing, shooting and what not.
A good example of what' they can
accomplish was shown at'the open­ing
of the Frlendship GamesI The
i Moscow clubs competed in a relay/
I It was a >10,000 metre relay with
teams of :ten runners and^each
running l.OOÖ metres. We counted
116 participating teams making a
total of 1,160 runners.
The Wo largest stadiums we've
visited here' during the sports: meet
are the Lenin and Dynamo sta­diums^.
The first one seats^ 106,000
and the lätter 65,000 and atv ali
meets the stadiums were packed.
We also saw a group o f students
doing gymnastics. There were about
3,000 of thein on the - field' at' one
time. Gymnastic8~ is taught in ,all
ischools "and SO are sports. They
have their own school and jnter-scholastic
competitions which are
real Interest builders. Ali clubs
and scbools havd the best of equip-ment
availäble.
We also visited sporting goods
Stores and found that ali the equip-
'ment is very cheap. Musical in-struments
were also cHeap. This
also helpsencourage youtb«to par-ticipate
in sports and music. We
could. carry tliis on forever, but we
muststop;now. ;
We are leaving for Finland soon

know that the matter has been up for discussion for many
years and thaffinally last year, despite the objections of two
clubs, it was decided to experiment with a joint festival; That
festival has now been held arid .b^cause of^th^ success of thje
festival it has been decided t b try^ again next year. ;
Personally we were very pleased with the festival and
were satisfied that ali phases of the festival; were carried s
out as well as could be expectedi We will also agree that;
many things could haAfe and should have been improved. i
But ali in alli it went over OK and the experience gained
wiir assure that many of the kinks will be ironed out. Cerr
tainly, the next time the festival is held in.Sudbury, we will |
have the past experience to help us in our preparations, r
We were very pleased to see that the vast majority of C
those who expressed opposition tb>combihing the festivals'
laid aside their beefs and actively participated in the corn-'
petitiohs and othejr aspects of the f^tival. . ^
Attimes our ears did pick up some remarks thatwe did^
not corisider to be sportsmanlike, but!tfien that happenswhen
there is extremely; close competifion and three clubs had;
their eye set on the Mänty Trophy for total points compe;^
tition.
When ali the points were tallied Speed led by a safe
margin for.a third victory^in a row whichmeans that the
trophy is. now out of circulation. We happened to hear that
Arnold Mänty is; anxious to donate another trophy and we
will probably; hear more about it soon.
We already mentioned that ali clubs v/ere not in favour
of a combined festivaL That is not uilusual because in a broad
federation such as the sports federation there are bound
to be conflicting ideas on numerous issues and ways niusti
be found to conipromisetheni according to the wishes of thöi
majority. That is why democratic organizations have thleii"!
annual meetings; That; is "the place i*rhere matters are dis-i
cussed and decided in a democratic-manner, according. to
the wish of the majority.
