Kilpailuaika päättyy syyskuun 1 ^nä 1961, johon men-

, CSJ:n toimeenpanevan komitean' hallussa. Kunkin näytel- '
1 ffxaon kirjoittajan tulee liittää salanimi näytelmänsä mukaan ja

'we' enjoy spectaele, singing
andidancing, beeause for a little
while we can be the dasliing herd
or the beautiful heroine, beeause
we can laugh a bellyful at" the co-medy
of the buffoon. We like F i n ­nish
folli musicals even better be-caus(
e they arouse an atavistic nos­talgia;
for the; old'country, that we
can indulge in while we " l i v e " for
three hours on the stage. So ali
these things we expected of "Muho­sen
I^immi" and ali these things
we experienped.
This delightful folk-play with its
uncomplicated plot lends itself
easily to spectaclfe*!! The costumes,
particularly of the gypsies (pardon
me, Romanies) and the Spanish
dancer, flash gaily as they move
about in the simple forest settings,
highlighted by the new spot-light-ing
(a great improvement over the
conventional ramp-lighting): The
setting show a welcome departure
from the "squate-box" stage. With
the sound effects in the back-ground,
the train is a real train in
the first act, and the divided stage
m the last act allows for greater
mobility, both to the actors and to
our imagination.
The simple folksongs are delight­ful.
Rendered by Jaakko '"and
Mimmi, the sad ones are really
haunting, but the comic ones could
be SO much more fun i f the "jät­kät"
kn^ew the words. The dances,
choreographed :especially foruthis
productionv-add a: new dimension:
to .an. other.wise straight folk-tale;
the dancmg in a l i cases is excel-lent,
but: the sophistication.of the
conception seems by far to out-weigh
the simplicity of the plot.
However, the play without the
Spanish dance and the gypsy
dances would:lose much of: i t s . f l a -
vour, and the: stunning onginality:
of • the others; surely expands our
honzons of artistic appreciation; rt
The actors ably execute their
roles;. M1 m m i : and J aakko: are nar
tural and' pleasing, their voices
superb. The gypsies, with their
;excellent make-up:.and"Costumes;£af-ford
some' of the funniest scenes/
especially when the Rom " f i n d s "
the villain's pen. ' The villain is
suitab'y slick-looking and ineffec-tual
enough in the end. The hero's
bait, the Spanish dancer, is dumb
but beautiful, and knows how to
use her eyes. The architect speaks
m a "dialect" Tve never heard on
stage before, but he'scharming and
handsome and deserves Dolores.
But the "jätkät", the carpenter-builders
on the government job,
are the funniest trio I have ever,
seen on the Finnish stage. They
are perfectlycastjUnderstand their
:roles,:Sowe.enjoy,their mock-fights,
their wooing of Mimmi, their belli-gerent
buffoonery.- " E n mä tier-rä"
will forever ring in our ears as
a remmder of:;those lovableclowns;
The play as a whole sparkles
only episodically; continuity-is lack-ing.
perhaps beeause the: actors; are
not sure enough of their relation
to each other. The .blocking is poori
and many:ackward positions result.:

puU the play together. But a spirit
of enjoymentj exulj^rance and en-

The US Presidential Election

who will guide the destiny of their nation for the next four years.
Many great and complex problems will face this incoming presi­dent
— among which will be. the peace and disarmament question,
. the easing of :World tensions^aid: to underdeveloped countriesi:^t
tremendous decline o f A m e i i c a n prestige thioughoul the woiid and
the proposed (by the Soviet Union) changes in the structure of
the United Nations.
To meet and resolve these pioblems, the American people will
need j truly great and wise leader, one who has the foresight, i n -
telhgenceand wisdom to squarely face these::problemsi onevwhov
absolutely refuse to be intimidaled by the Pentagon brass or the
Big Business pressure groups.
At the moment it is highly debatable whether Kennedy or Nixon
can meet these qualifications.
At present their political campaigns seem to be centied around
the question of whether Quemoy and Maisu should be defended by
the Americans for Chiang Kai-shek, should the bone fide Chinese
Communist government on the mainland of China decide to reclaim
them.
This is a question that could be much more easily resolved in
the United Nations by allowing the Chinese Communist government
to take their rightful place in the United Nations along with the
other nations of the world. Needless to say neither of the candi-dates
advocate admission of China to the United Nations.
Both candidates are in favour of continuing the cold war. In
other words they think that the same amount of money, and perhaps
' more, (it is now about $40 billion annually) should be spent on
-American defence expenditures. So its certainly obvious that they
' are not thinking in terms of peaceful coexistence with the rest of
the world^ ^ ^ —_
- What the Americans really need no'» is a president of the-Roose-
—veltian type. One who could sit down honestly and.pbjectively with
'l)remier Khruschov in a sincere effort to solve the serious intema-
' tional problems, that exist today.

delving into the reasons for good
and bad child behaviourj^ His book;
is an exploration' of the difficult
route to the gradual development
of c r i t e r i a . f o r assessing the be-haviour
of an exemplary Soviet
Citizen, a Citizen wh03e pptential is
fuUy utilized-for his own and his
country's benefit.
What makes a book about child
behäviour' i n the Soviet Union dif-ferent
from our own? It is the em-phasis
and insistence placed on a
high moral standard* of living that
makes the difference. The revolu-tion
changed the economic system
and thereby changed almost every-thing
• m the peoplc,'s lives. Sudden-ly
ali the people^ controUed j;he
•means of production;:. bosses. could
nö longer exploit the workers,;for;
the bosses were the workers. No
more did people need to cheat, l i e,
giovel or worry to gain a liveli-hood;
they were. guaranteed the
right to work. Labour was not on­ly
the means, to-economic Security
but the means to a better l i i e for
everyone This new economic situ-ation
necessarily called for a diffe-lent
attitude to living; how best to
live the good life occupied Soviet
educators • like Makarenko. Since
the leasons f or ? immoral ity, frwhich
stem directly from the profit sys­tem,
had been lotally removed
from Soviet lifeijthen a new, moral
way of living must' replace it. Ma-karenko's
book charts the early
Soviet pursuit of morality in its
application to bringing up children,
the future citizerts of the first so-cialist
State in the World.
Without mincing words or spar-ingfeelings,
Makarenko places, the
responsibility for a:child's upbring-ing
squarely on his parents shoul-ders.

children are directly influ-e
n c e d b y e v e r y t h i n g and everyone
around them; They are influenced
mostlyby.people, parents and tea-chers

a concrete idea of how to live a

ness; Makarenko eompares children
to fruit-trees, and parents to gard-eners
who use their skill i n trans-forming:
nature to produce human
excellence. He says, "To lead a
child wisely and surely along the
rich paths of life, is a task'which
every man can accomplish if he
really wants to do so." (p, 23). F u r -
ther he says, "You must be not
only father and guardian: of: your
children. you must also be Organ­izer
of your own life, beeause your
quality as an edticator is entirely
bound up with your activities as a
Citizen and your feelings as an i n -
dividual.*' {». 27).
Through examples4)f actual fam-ily
problems,'Makarenko illustrates
the socialist approach to life. Fam­ily
tfinances, parental authority, sex
education, divorce and other mat-ters
come to his attention as he
seeks to formulate correct res-ponses
to the problems arising from
human relationships. In every
situation he finds that mutual res-pect
and love, engendered by-the
recognition of the dignity of the
individual within the collective, re­sult
in harmonious relationships.

Jention^ in our society. Makarenko
is^so right when he says, "Of a li
human inventions this -invention
came nearest to the devil." (p. 94).
In Chapter 4 he outlines the way
three families used money in their
daily lives. Babich doled out each
kopeck to his family as though^he
were conferring a' favour on each
of them. The whole Lysenko fam­ily
had access to a l i the money that
the famliy acquired;'there was no
Control- or discpline over its use.'
The' Pyzhovs;'^however, seemed' to
know that'money is',merely a use-ful,
everyday accessöry, a ^ o r m al

of abuse. The'family budget re-ceived
