Euroopan mestaruuskilpailuissa
Belgradissa' viime kesänä ollut yh­tään
osanottajaa suomalaisten enti­sillä
paraatimatkoilla 5 ja- 10 km.
Samaa voidaan sanoa Rooman olym­pialaisista.
Mutta Roomassakin oli
maratoonilla mukana kaksi mies­tä,
Eino Oksanen j a Tenho Salakka,
e l i juuri samat miehet jotka nyt
osallistuvat Suomea edustaen Bos
tönin maratoonille. Samat miehet
edustivat Suomea myöskin Belgrad­eissa
maratoonilla . vaan tulos ei
ollut mairitteleva.
Oksasella on kolme voittoa Bos­tonin
maratoonilla ja voitto viime
keväänäkin. Hänellä siis on koke­musta
tällä matkalla, mutta Ten­ho
Salakka osallistuu nyt ensiker­ran
tähän kilpailuun. Salakka on
ollut viime.aikoina hiukan parei^pi
kuin Oksanen, voittaen hänet niu­kasti.
Ratkaiseko nyt Oksasen ko­kemus
vai voittaako Salakka . .
Usein on kylmä, kun juostaan,
kuten viime keväänäkin. Suomalais­ten
voittoon on vaikuttanut paljon
:se, ettei enää, kuten aikaisemmin,
ole ollut mukana todellisia maa­ilman
huippujuoksijoita, vaan mel­keinpä
vain amerikkalaisia,- kun taas
aikaisemmin osallistui juoksuun
japanilaisia, argentiinalaisia ja
vaikk^ minkäkaanlaisia.
Bostonin maratoonin voitto " o n
kuitenkin siitäkin huolimatta voitto
joka arvostetaan kaikkialla maail­massa.
Viime kesänä Salakka osal­listui
Japanissa kuuluisaan Asahi
maratooniin sijoittautuen kahdek
sanneksi. , Samoissa kilpailuissa
juoksi amerikkalainen Leonardo G.
Edcleii sijoittui parhaana ulkomaa­laisena
neljänneksi, ajalla 2.18.56.8.

on jo pois kipsistä, mutta hän ei
voi kuitenkaan, uneksiakaan harjoi­tusten
alkamista. Grodotzkia hoita­nut
lääkäri sanoo, että se, on mah­dollista
aikaisintaan kahden kuu­kauden
kuluttua. Hänen mahdolli­suutensa
osallistua edessäolevan
kauden kilpailuihin ovat siis mini­maalisen
pienet.

the workers to study. You'll
also find them in every nook and

Examinafions
iVhitefish. — Phew, L didn't think
Iwould make it, those exams were
really härd. Talking about exams,
I have been wondering why one
should write examiiiations in the
first place, I know many cases
where a student does well in his
daily work and weekly tests but
when it is lime to write examina-tions
the result is that he or she
fails. It would be much better i£
the person's promotions would be
based on the daily work of the
student, for example, his co-opera-tion
in class, and the weekly tests.
Besides the abolishment of ex­aminafions,
compulsory subjects
should be done :away wilh also.
For example a student who wishes
to go into a business course, should
be able to lake these_subjects con-cerned
A\'ith that particular course
and nolhing el.se. If the present
education system be improved
there would not be as many drop
ouls from school as there are now.

no play has come out of Beaver

I know there are many young
people living in Beaver Lake and
many of the old veterans are still
capable of participating in plays.

other clubs dominate the talent
wh'en we know darn well that there
are many talenled people in Bea­ver

LETTERS FROM THE EARTH
Mark Twain died in 1910, but a
book of his, never publishedbefore,
has just reached the reading pub­lic.
This alone Avould be an ex-citing
lilerary event, but when the
book is Letters F r om the Earth i l
is an unparalleled marvel.
Primarily, Twain was a c r i l i c of
the "damned human race" (as he
calls it); that was his mission on
earth. His perceptive eye casts its
critical gleam not only on the peity
foibles of individual humans but
on the kind of Society to which the
great American democralic experi-ment
(which Walt Whilman had
heralded with such hope and ex-altation)
had evolved.
