are both educational as weU as a
necessary part i n world's marcl}
toward peace and friendship.
One of the most impressive feat-ures
at this festival was the fact
tbat every country, large or small,
had an equal chance to present its
culture. We could sit through aq
afternoon concert presented by per-bBps
youth from,the USA, Russia,
Italy o r some other leading natioJ^
Und the same evening we could en-joy
a performance .by Moroccans,
Mexicans or some other smaller
nation.
Thjs healthy atmospheFe of equal-ity
has many. valuable lessons for
such a c o u n t r y as Canada which bas
£0 many nationalities.' It is, In my
opinion, necessary for ali national
groups to take an active .part in
putting f o r w a r d their r i c h traditions
and c u i t u r a l beritage'if;;we expecl
to d^velop a truly X^anadiänciilture.
What would life be, l i k e i n our
country if we didn't have the rich
expenences of our Italian immi-grants
m singing, the Scottish pipes
and bands, the Finnish stage or the
song and dance of French-Can-adians.
Countless other examples
could be given of cuitural riches
which have been brought here'and
developed furthei^rtbriiugh '>.the
years. >'

must as Finnish-Canadians start
asking ourselves how we can fur-ther
our contribution tO'this great

from foreign countries to-Star at
our exhibitions and celebraUons is
not the solution. Ilather,:we should
feature our own Canadian artists
and yoikth. Musically i n ' recent
months some of our artists have
won international acdaim and the
Canadian con,certs presented at the
Festival were very well received by
the young people f r om many differ-entlands.
From Halifax to Vancouver jyoung
people particularly have^^a wonder-ful
chance to keep the biall r o l l i ng
as pur fathers and mothers have
done and are stilL. doing,. young
Finnish-Canadians can b ^ db this
by joining and actively pärticipat-ing
i n Finnish-Canadian sports and
cuitural groups. This wouId be ful-f
i l l i n g the idea of keeping Canada
Independent and free wbich was
envisioned by the Fathers of Con­federation
and surely everyone of
us supports that concept. /

It's some time since I have sat down
to write to this page and after read-ing
some of the more recent letters
I have a few tliings of my own to
say.^
Some weeks ago oneof our boys
wrote what we consldered a very
good article oh building and holding
a sports club together. There were
a lot' of good hints that ali d u bs
could benefit by. induding our ovm.
However, looking at the two
sports meets we have had since it
doesn't seem to have accomplished
much. These local sports meets
seem to be contests between Speed
and Jehu. ' . A t the Aluejuhla at
fieaver Lake two weeks ago we
noticed one participant from Alerts.
At the meet last Sunday we*didn't
notice any. Nor were there any
spectators from that club. For a
club that held the >lead for total
points at times during the Sports
Festival and finished in t h i r d piace,
where are they the rest of^he time?
The writer I referred to before
talked of holding a club together
and how team-work helped to do it.
I would like to say that^ it is even
more important with the Fede­ration.
It i s . becoming more ap-parent
that for some membership
in the Federation is. only a week-end
affair but once a year. How
long would this Federation last if
no one turned up at the small
meets? Not one year! And if we
are tp keep i t together and buUd it
u p . I say we must do" i t by year-round
competition and not by one
big splash.
One of the things our d u b mem-bers
take pride i n is the f a c t that
we are a year-round club. We corn*
pete i n every Pederation-sponsoried
meet, no matter how small, i f it is
at ali possible to do so. For the
small dubs such as J e h u and Speed
to conUnually provide the compe^
t i t i on there is no sense of fahrness.
Should we be left to keep things
going SO that the " b i g " d u b s can
hold the Festivals? Ifs a prlvilege
that we may never have, yet at L l l t -
tojuhlas our stiffest competition
comes from clubs that do not see
fit to send representatives to qur
meets. Something must be done
about this situation.
At the Annual Jileeting 1 heard
many suggestions put fonvard as to
how we should try to make Liitto-juhlas
even.bigger. It starts with
the club meets. If we cannot corn-pete
there then >ve have no right to
compete i n the championships. It
is no longerenough for the rule to
read that we must belong to a club
for at least three months before
Liittojublas. We must take part in
at least two meets before and after.
I realize that it is not always
possible for every athlete to be at
every meet but surely we can ali
send a team out to compete i n local
d u b meets. Lefs wakes up and
puli tog6ther before i f s too late.

the festival and on the other hand other young. people have
written some interesting material about our sports clubs.
We think that is wonderful and sincerelyhope that the
pattern will continue from week to week with contribution$
coming in from every centrö. And there must be lots to
write about because now is the-time that the actlvities around
the hali are slowly revived.
If you have nothing to write about activities we would
be glad to publish your comments on the articles that have
been published recently. Some issues that might be con^
sidered controversial have been raised and we would like
to hear .as'many opinions as possible. So, lefs have your
opinion. ,
We certainly consider it very important that questions
are discussed because it is only natural that all people do
not think alike and therefore discussion is necessary in the
quest for the truth.
Speaking of the truth, we have had numerous discussions
with Osmo Lahti and Unto and Laila Penttinen re. the Moscow
Festival and it seems that their accoimts are considerably
different to some of the accoimts we have read in the big
dailies. Past experience tells ns that Osmo, Unto and Laila
are right and that the dailies were looking at things wlth
a biased eye.
Because of this we wöuld certainly urge that you make
note of the date Osmo, Unto and Laila are speaking in your
locality and mäke a point of being there because they really
have a story to teli that is not only true but also verjr in­teresting.
Speaking the truth is not alvj^ays too profitable finan-cially
and w.p find that small papers like ours, which are
more concerned witK telling the truth, even if is a bit con­troversial
at times, than trying to please the big corpo-rations
and getting their fqll page ads, Just can't seem to
make ends meet. Such has been thecase V/ith the Vapaus for
some years.
But despite the fact that the budget winds up a bit in

Osmo Lahti arrived i n Sudbury
last Friday and has told us a great
deal about the Sixth World Youth
Festival which was held i n Moscow.
Ä great many happenings at the
festival were rcally impressive ac-cording
to Osmo. But as a young
Finnish-Canadian he wa8 particular­ly
impressed by the sports events.
Obviously the sports meet was a
very large scale international event.
Osmo pointed out the folIowing
highlights:
N e a r l y four thousand athletes
from 44 countries took part i n the
III Friendly Games. The Moscovv
meet was the greatest i n the history
of the Games and outstanding by
the high standards achieved in
many of the events. The program
of the III Friendly Games induded
23 different events. The most fep-
_ _ resentative teams were those of the
the red eve^y yeai^ the readers and supporters oflhis paper h^^5;;f
are SO ;determined to cpntinue publishing it three times a
Week that they open up their purse strings to cover the
deficit.
Those whodo not read the Finnish sections of this pa­per,
will have noticed that in the past few issues there have
been columns and coltimns of. names in larger print than
ordinary. That is the Honor roll of the people, Irom old age
pensioners to teen-agers who have donated to the sustaining
fund of the paper. The drive started at the beglnning of the
month and will continue uniil the objective has beeil reached,
We would suggest thaf the readerö of this sectibn, too, show
that they are anxious tö do their bit to maintain our paper,

rakkauden ikivanhoihin perin­teisiin,
joista myös suomalaiset nyt

kauppa- j a ystävyyssuhteiden lujit­tumista
ja julisti messut avatuiksi.
Avajaisjuhlallisuuksien jälkeen

joka avattiin yleisälle klo 15.
