turnaukseen. Nisse Nilsson, joka
Squaw Valleyn kisoissa nimitettiin
parhaimmaksi hyökkäyspeluriksi,
sai leukaluumurtuflian ja joutuu
ainakin jonkin aikaa oleuaan pois
otteluista.
Toinen 'Ruotsin parhaimmista,
monivuotinen maajoukkueen hyök­kääjä
Lars-Erik Lundvally sai polvi­vamman,
eikä voi osallistua maail-manmestaruusturnaukseen.
Kaksi
muuta lievemmin loukkaantunutta
ruotsalaista voi selvitä maailman-mestaruusturnaukseen.

lahjavoitoista, joita olikin
kerääntynyt aika paljon. Myöskin
kiitos kaikille emännille, jotka toi­vat'tullessaan
lahjavoittoja sekä r a -
vintolatarpeita.
Näin yhteisvoimin saadaan tällai
set tilaisuudet parenunin onnistu­maan.
Tällaiset yhdessä vietetyt
hetket ovatkin piristäviä tällaisen
yksitoikkoisen elämän keskellä kuin
täällä Kirkland Lakella nykyään

on istunut kaikkien keskuu­teen.
Tässä hiljattain ilmoitettiin
kaupalammie valtuuston puolesta ja
PS^ydettiin veronmaksajia saapu­maan
toiselle kylämme kansakou­lulle,
jossas valittiin koululautakun­ta,
kuultiin entisen lautaku-nnan t o i ­mintaraportti
viime vuodelta ja tie­tenkin
valittiip sama lautakunta
uudelleen, koska tilit ja muut asijat
näyttivät olevan O. K. Mutta tästä
neljäntuhannen asukkaan kyläst|i
oli saaunut vain kahdeksan henki­löä
tuohon kokoukseen, jossa oli
tietenkin entinen koululautakunta
näiden kahdeksan joukkoon lasket­tuna.
Tällaisesta joukosta ei ole
paljon valinnan varaa. Veronmak­sajia
oli vain kahdeksan mutta tu­hannet
"kikkiväf veroja liian suu­r
i k s i (ei kokouksessa vain jokainen
valittelee omissa nurkissaan.)
Viime sunncntai-illaksi oli kut­suttu
suomalaisia täkäläiselle haa-lille
keskustelemaan ja päättämään
haalimme asioista. Mutta miten kä­vi?
Raportit olisi tietenkin voitu
esittää, mutta Kun haalin kannatta­jat
olivat sieltä-.poissa, n i i n siitä­kään
ei olisi ollut mitään hyötyä.
Siksi päätettiinkin, että ensi sun-

siellä tarjotaan haalin puolesta väke­vän

Winnipeg Arena drew 6,000 spec-tators
and Canadian athletes'!* prb-vided
some of the biggest thrills.'

Canadian runnei;,destined.to make

Although his achievmepts

Old. This is an age when .few

actueved international. fame. In
the two mile run Bruce turned in
an excellent 8:58.2 minutes' v ^ i ch
eclipsed the old Canadian record of
9:04.. This makes the future. lopk
promising when drawing a .com-parison
with the World record ^et
at 8:34.2 just recently by Murray
Halberg of New Zealand. In the
one mile run, which was the final
event of the evening, Bruce had
6,000 people on their feet yelling
their lungs out as he started on
the last quarter mile trailing J im
Irons of Brampton. Irons inciden-tally
is the only runner to hold a
win over Bruce Kidd i n the last
year. This time there was no deny-ingö
Bruce's blazing finishing kick
which would have put many sprin-ters
to shame. The^stop watches
registered 4:12.1. Not bad at ali
for a growmg lad.
The Toronto contingent took the
lion's share of the medals. Bill
Crothers and George Sheppard fin-ished
one-two i n the 500 yard final
with the Winner clocking 57.8,
which is equivalent to about 50
seconds for the' quarter mile. J im
Snider, the man'with,piston legs,
took the half infle i n 2:00.6: Orville
Atkins added td Toronto's laurels
with a 14:59.9 win in the 3-mile
run. ;This was well off the meet
record of 13:52.2, Sind the Canadian
record of 13:45.4, both held by C 4 -
gary's Dong Kyle.
The 1,000 yard final was the only
distance event i n whic]^ the Toron­to
crew had to settie for second
place. Ron Gregory from the Uni­versity
of Notre Dame showed the
form which has m a d e him a big
name i n indoor track circles. He
won in a time of 2:19.7, just a
shade off the Canadian • record of
2:18.1 held by Bob McFarlane. If
the name Ron Gregory seems fa-miliar,
it should be. He is co-holder
of the Canadian one mile
record and shares it with Archie
San Romani at 4:09.7. This time,
along with many other Canadian
marks, was set at one of Winni-peg's
indoor meets'last year.
Some spectators were wondering
why Ron Gregory did not match
talents wit'h Bruce Kidd in the
feature one m i l e run last Saturday
night. This is not a reflecfion on
either athlete as some people might
construe. The organizers of the
meet ti^ed to provide at leastone
top notch performer i n every event,
and in this they' succeeded admir-ably.
The audience really got
their money's worth.
There is not sufficient späce to

Bob Reid set a new Canadian
polevault record of 14 feet before
he was forced to drop out in a
battle with J im Graham ot Okla­homa
State who went on to win

broke the Canadian discus re­cord
with a toss of 130 feet 3% ins.
Noreen Dueling ran the half mile

WHEAT FOR CHINA
We were very happy to read that Canada is selling $40-
million worth of its good wheat to Ghina. Ali of a sudden, a
country wedo not öfficially recognize (yet) becomes our third
largest wheat customer.
' As we said, we were most happy to hear about this sale,
because our economy is in dire need of more such deals, and
; j^erhaps this is just the beginning of a more satisfactory .(and
Teailistic) relationship between Canada and China — and the
other Socialist nations.
Apparently, factions belo,w the border, the remnants of
the Brinksmen, The Gommittee of One Million, and their har-ried
hack v^rriters have brayed out that Canada has stabbed
the good, old U. S. öf A. in the back. We hope that the new
U.S. administration does not share this absenee of outlook.
I . It is definitely in Canada's interest to energetically work
for better relations with the socialist and neutral nations.
Last Week, we commented on the imemploymenttragedy. It
takes on even more tragic and ridiculous proportions when
we se how much of our products are needed, and how very
willing these nations are to deal with us. The best examples
of this are China, Cuba and Ghana. We support every eff ort-to
expand our trade, particularly with new customers — the
socialist and former colonial states. The benefits of Canada
would be twofold. It would definitely bring much needed
aid to our sick economy, and also, it wculd be a positive step
towards creating the friendly relations between ali nations
which are so necessary for disarmament and peace.
